Carbon Cycle • A biogeochemical cycle by which carbon is exchanged among the biotic and abiotic factors of the Earth.
Organelles Mitochondrion: breaks down organic molecules in the presence of oxygen to create energy for the cell (cellular respiration)
Chloroplast: Stores energy in the form of organic molecules from carbon dioxide and releases oxygen by using sunlight (photosynthesis)
Endosymbiotic theory: a host cell engulfed prokaryotic cells capable of photosynthesis and cellular respiration
Evidence of Oxygen in the Atmosphere • Cyanobacteria: bacteria that get their energy through photosynthesis and are the only photosynthetic prokaryotes able to produce oxygen.

The oxygen produced from the cyanobacteria was used to make rust (iron + oxygen) • Rust in rock layers begins to form about 2.7 billion years ago (bya) • This is after the first stromatolite fossil appears in our fossil record (3.7 bya)
