Pawn Opening move: Up one or two Capturing move: Up one diagonally After first move: Up one or capture
Rook Move horizontally or vertically In a straight line as far as it can go without jumping another piece.
Knight Moves in an L shape Only piece that can jump other pieces
Bishop Can move diagonally as many squares as possible without jumping another piece
Queen Can move diagonally or horizontally or vertically as many squares as possible without jumping Most powerful piece
King Must be protected Can only move one space When captured, game is lost
