My AltaVista: The Advanced Keyword Adventure Mary Strouse ILUG Annual Meeting July 20, 2002
AVS Toolbox • Advanced Keyword Fundamentals • Basic Decisions: Screens, Segments & Limits • The Fine Print: WWWOptions, Tokens, Javascript • Advanced staff searching ILUG 7/20/02 mms
Why Advanced Keyword? • Speed – faster results, faster indexing • Phrase searching • Segmentation – keyword in title, etc. • Cross-index searches (w/o 2-step process) • Wildcarding ILUG 7/20/02 mms
Why Advanced Keyword? • Pre-search limits & sorts • Bells & whistles • Proximity operators (near & within), • Relevance sorting (title, then author, then subject) • Keyword highlighting ILUG 7/20/02 mms
What Hasn’t Changed • Only indexed fields are searched • Result is a list of titles • No cross-references • Limit on retrieval (32,000 “bib record entries”) • Keyword synonyms list ILUG 7/20/02 mms
Cross-Reference ILUG 7/20/02 mms
Subject Search Result ILUG 7/20/02 mms

Basics: 3 Search Screens (+1) The X,Y and Z of it: X – Advanced Boolean (pre-search limits) Y – Simple Boolean (w/o limits) Z – Simple “AltaVista” searching ILUG 7/20/02 mms
Simple Boolean (Y) ILUG 7/20/02 mms
Advanced Boolean (X) ILUG 7/20/02 mms
The Search-builder (X+) ILUG 7/20/02 mms
“AltaVista” Searching • Broad search (default “Or”) • Use + and – to include/exclude • Relevance ranking by default • No segments, limits, or boolean operators • Wildcarding to end of word ILUG 7/20/02 mms
Basics: 4 Segments • Author (a:) , Title (t:) and Subject (s:) • Use same fields as existing indexes • Notes (n:) • Fields customizable at setup • All fields must belong to at least one segment (… or limit) • No custom segments (but….) ILUG 7/20/02 mms
Basics: Choice of Fields • Maximalist approach (default) – includes most 5xx fields • Minimalist approach – 505, 520 [& 970 subfields not already included] • “Notes” segment can include other fields or subfields (ex. GMD from 245 |h ) ILUG 7/20/02 mms
GMD’s in Notes Segment ILUG 7/20/02 mms
Basics: Choice of Limits • Pre-Search Limits can be: • Fixed length codes • Special fields (006, 008) • Variable fields • Existing Post-Search limits as default (minus “search as words”) • Custom limits allowed ILUG 7/20/02 mms
Custom Limits using 007 ILUG 7/20/02 mms
Custom Limits, Good and Bad • Pre-search limits are indexed • Variable field limits can function as custom segments • Use caution: Data from limits added to general (unsegmented) search ILUG 7/20/02 mms
Variable limit as drop-down ILUG 7/20/02 mms
Variable limit in Cross-Index Search ILUG 7/20/02 mms
Limit used as exclusion ILUG 7/20/02 mms
Publisher Limit ILUG 7/20/02 mms
“Noise” retrieval ILUG 7/20/02 mms
AVS WWWoptions AVS_TAG AVS_TAG=XYZ • Determines what searches are allowed (separate from searches offered (screens) • Must have search screens to match • Consider impact on pass-through searches (e.g. Partners, INN-Reach) ILUG 7/20/02 mms
AVS WWWoptions • ASSEARCH (Release 2000 Update D) (Replaces ASTRUNCATE) 1 Change to "AND" 2 Change to "OR" 3 Strip off field limits …. Etc. • AVS_RELEVANCE_FORMAT • Coming option to restore “and”default (Rel 2002 Phase 3) ILUG 7/20/02 mms
One Display WWWoption KEYWORD_COLOR Controls color highlighting • On/Off • Color choice • What fields/field groups apply ILUG 7/20/02 mms
Keyword Highlighting ILUG 7/20/02 mms
…and a System Option First code entered is the default (controls in Telnet, Millennium). A = Alphabetical D = Date R = Relevance ILUG 7/20/02 mms
Tokens Take Over Required Tokens • <!--{msg}--> Error message Needed to generate “no hits” message • <!--{search}--> creates search input box ILUG 7/20/02 mms
What [else] required tokens do <!--{search}--> also: • Preserves search criteria on “modify search” • Triggers color highlighting of keywords ILUG 7/20/02 mms
“No hits” message ILUG 7/20/02 mms
The Java Jive Javascripts library on CSdirect • Expand “no hits” search (various versions) • Search-builder (coming soon) • [Your idea here] ILUG 7/20/02 mms

Pass-through “no hits” Screen ILUG 7/20/02 mms
Advanced Staff Searching • AVS available in both Telnet and Millennium • In Millennium and Telnet search, default is simple Boolean (Y) search • In Telnet modules, use command language to specify search (X) ILUG 7/20/02 mms
AVS in Millennium (Y) ILUG 7/20/02 mms
