  2. WELCOME NOTE The Benguela railways - E.P., wishes all participants of the 2nd Conference of Ministers of Transports of Africa a warm welcome.

  3. GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION

  4. The Benguela railways start in Lobito´s Harbour, located on the Atlantic coast of Angola, in Benguela province and extends by 1344 kilometers far eastward, crossing the provinces of Benguela, Huambo and Bié to the eastern border province of Moxico, to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

  5. HISTORY

  6. The Benguela railways was founded on November 27th, 1902, by decree, authorizing a grant of land for the construction of a PORT and a RAILWAY from Lobito to Angola's eastern border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

  7. The concession contract was awarded on the following day, 28th November 1902, between the Portuguese Government and the British citizen Robert Williams, who was granted the right to construct and operate the railroad for a period of 99 years. RobertWilliams

  8. In 1973 the Railroad reaches the maximum of its transportation: 3.279.439 tons, including 1.609.387 tons of international traffic. In 1975 the railways international traffic operations was suspended, with the beginning of the civil war.

  9. On 28th November 2001, terminated the concession contract and the Companhia do Caminho de Ferro de Benguela (CCFB) assets (rolling and fixed equipment) have been incorporated in CFB-EP a new public entity created on the 9th September 2003 by the Government of República de Angola.

  12. STRATEGIC SIGNIFICANCE

  13. The track gauge, 1,067 m, is adopted as standard in Southern Africa, the Benguela railways serve a vast area of national territory, is also an important outlet for products and goods to neighboring countries which do not benefit from the coastline.

  14. REHABILITATION AND MODERNIZATION OF THE CFB

  15. On January 6th, 2006, benefitting from a credit line of People´s Republic of China, the Angolan Government awarded the rehabilitation and modernization contract of the Benguela railways to China Railway-20, called CR-20, a Chinese conglomerate.

  27. MAIN INDICATORS-ONGOING WORK

  29. TARGET Upon completion of the work, the projected capacity will be placed in 4.0 million passengers per year and 20.0 million tons per year, including ore from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of Zambia.

  30. Goal On the 29 th September of the current year, were inaugurated the sections Lobito-Benguela and Lobito-Huambo, with restart of operations of passenger and freight trains between these cities. The final completion of rehabilitation work of CFB is scheduled for the end of 2012.

  31. PERSPECTIVE: Is planned in the second phase of the project rehabilitation, a track construction of a railway line, 280 km length, from the locality of Luacano to Jimbe in Moxico province, in the border with the Republic of Zambia.

  32. PERSPECTIVE: The ongoing developments leads us to believe that at the end of 2012, the promise to put the train in the border with Democratic Republic of Congo will be fulfilled.
