  2. General Letters • There are 8 books in General Letters. They are Hebrews, James, 1 Peter, 2 Peter, 1 John, 2 John, 3 John and Jude.

  3. Hebrews • Writer: Barnabas Another possibility is Apollos. • When: A.D. 70 • Chapters: 13 Chapters • Theme: The superiority of Jesus.

  4. Characteristics • Portrait of Jesus Christ seen through the Old Testament • Superiority of Jesus over the prophets, angels, Moses and priests. • Message that Jesus Christ is greater than all.

  5. James • Writer: James It is assumed that the James who wrote this book is was the brother of Jesus and the leader of the church in Jerusalem. • When: A.D. 45 • Chapters: 5 Chapters • Theme: Christianity in action.

  6. Characteristics • Reflect sermonic style of both Greek philosophers and Jewish rabbis.

  7. 1 Peter • Writer: Peter • When: Between A.D. 64 & 68 • Chapters: 5 Chapters • Theme: Hope in the midst of suffering.

  8. Characteristics • The presence of hope in the middle of suffering • How to live as a Christian • Jesus is held as their hope, savior and example, and their Lord. • This chapter is written to Christians who were suffering because they believe in Jesus.

  9. 2 Peter • Writer: Peter • When: Near the time of Peter’s death. A.D. 68 • Chapters: 3 Chapters • Theme: Be eager and on your guard.

  10. Characteristics • To grow in the Christian virtues • Between the character and teaching of true apostles and false teacher • Second coming of Jesus • Written for believers

  11. 1 John • Writer: John • When: A.D. 80 • Chapters: 5 Chapters • Theme: Walking in the light.

  12. Characteristics • Distillation about John, now an old man who wants people to remember about faith. • The essence that God is light. • Message: Friendship with God and with others.

  13. 2 & 3 John • Writer: John • When: A.D. 80s • Chapter: 1 for 2 John and 1 for 3 John • Theme: hospitality for teachers who are itinerant (traveling from place to place).

  14. Characteristics • John’s concern in his first epistle for the truth. • Message: To follow God’s commands and not to listen to false teacher.

  15. Jude • Writer: Jude • When: A.D. 65 or 80 • Chapter: 1 Chapter • Theme: Contend for the faith.

  16. Characteristics • Quotes from the Old Testament and the Apocrypha. • Christians are to “contend for the faith” and they are to do against false teacher.
