Music Magazine-My Evaluation Elizabeth Alabi
Forms and conventions • First, my magazine is unique in the sense that there’s no magazine out there that deals specifically with motown soul music. This means that my magazine will • Second, there’s no basic rules. My Mag addresses spontaneous and real issues therefore it does not conform to the forms and conventions of real mag. • Further, I tried to make my mag more realistic and down to earth so that it would appeal to a diverse range of people. the layout of my magazine is very simple which will attract people. I have taken a picture that emphasises the essence of the simplicity of my magazine. • Along with this i have used language that also very simplistic and understandable which helps to engage with the readers more, but i have made it very formal. In my double page spread there use of colloquial language for the reason its an interview. • Colour i have used various different colours to give a soulful scenery the colours stand out but also gives the soulful sensation.
Representational issues Black community People that can engage with soul music A diverse range of people mainly ages 25 and above for the reason they are people who no more about soul music since it has been around for a long time. the significance of this magazine is to reach out to young people shows were r’n’b and hip-hop originated from .i have represented my models through out my magazine as young black girls who are being portrayed as young new soul artist my magazine reinstates the fact that its not only elderly people can engage in motown music.
Institutions Various institutions such as book shops, schools, supermarkets , higher educations may distribute my magazine. This is because they are places that have a diverse community also are very inspiring they promote people so that they are acknowledged through magazines. This is a very rare magazine as motown is not a major genre so before u find a motown magazine it would take a while. When I was doing research into this genre the only magazine that I found was a mojo magazine special edition. So there may be problems in finding this magazine the positive thing about this magazine is it a mainstream magazine meaning it reaches out to a wide range of people it’s a case of you either like motown or not. So from the research I did places such as whsmith's Tesco's Asda’s ,other supermarkets and corner shops that sell magazine may selll it . ll my magazine.
Target audience My target audience is for a wide range of people, which has been created to give a sense of diversity. It is directed mainly to those who have an interest in soul music, in many cases black African Americans. having said that it appeals to anyone who can relate to soul music.
Addressing the readership I did this by using catch phrases which the young generation usually associate themselves with and various titles throughout the creation of my magazine. I also made my front cover eye catching with the use of bright colours, it may also appeal to customers of target audience as it has a competition. i tended to use very modern use very modern types of English with the intentions of appealing to the right target audience such as the older generations who would be able to relate more to this genre as it is what many of them grew up with.
Technical/Construction Issues Editing Typography Layout Photoshop Greyscale/ washouts Taking pictures In the process of using these different software's and constructions I found it very straightforward for the reason I already new how to use some of the software's and I new how to do most of the things that were required. The only thing that was a struggle for me was the use Photoshop as to it was a software that was very new to me . After practicing and finally getting the hang of it It became less of a problem to me.
Comparisons between prelim and main tasks. From looking at my preliminary task and my music magazine i have acknowledged a major difference. Between the creation of both magazines i have learnt a lot such as various different software's and layout techniques and how to use them, also i have learnt how to take pictures from different shots and angles. i feel that the preliminary a practice task that gave me a brief idea of what it was going to be like creating a magazine, i feel that it really helped me in a number of ways because it gave me an idea of how i would create my music magazine and what i had to do to make it look professional.
Comparisons between my first draft and final copy From looking at my first drafts compared to my final copy I have noticed some major positive differences in my work. I have taken time to consider how I want my front cover to look and I have taken a closer look at the layout and rearranged how it looks to make it seem more like a magazine. The formation and use of language has been taken into consideration in order reach out to my main target audience and to expand on my creativity. It was felt that my first draft was very plain and could have been improved so in my Final production I used different colours and added more writing to make it stand out I alos changed my model and made her to look more like a real motown artist. In doing this I have not only shown that I am a very creative person but I have also shown how factors such as formation layout and use of language are very important when constructing a music magazine and if this has not been carefully considered then it can have a major effect on your final product. There are also differences in the imagery and the fonts used. This is because of the skills and new software's I learnt during the production of my final products It gave me a chance to carefully edit any unwanted fragment on my magazine which would make the product look unprofessional and would have effects on my final grade.
