What is DSL ?!* DSL=[Digital Subscriber Line] ,, it is a technology for bringing high-bandwidth information to homes and small businesses over ordinary copper telephone lines ,,
-(Cont.) :-*XDSL refers to different variations of DSL such as .. RADSL ADSL HDSL
Advantages of DSL :- 1- DSL is always on ,, 24 HRS a day ..2- No Dial-up required ..3- Data security ..
Advantages of DSL (Cont.) :- 4- Use the phone at the same time you are on-line ..5- iT’s flexible6- supper fast speeds
Disadvantages of DSL :- 1- DSL connection works better when user is closer to the provider’s central office ..2- The connection is faster for receiving data than it is for sending data over the internet ..3- The service is not available everywhere ..
-How do I know if my DSL service is activated ?!* Your DSL service provider will give you an activation date ,, You can pretty much rely on it When that date comes & you've installed all your hardware & software ,, you've to attempt to connect to the service & see if it works ..
-(Cont.) :-* Power on the modem and wait 30 seconds for it to warm up ,, If the Line Sync light becomes steady green (and not flashing) ,, then the connection is working ..
-Can I still talk on the telephone or send faxes when I'm online ?!* Yes ,, DSL technology uses frequencies other than the ones required for voice communication ,, Both can co-exist on the same telephone line ,, Faxes & modems use voice frequencies & are thus unaffected by your DSL service ..
-Is my DSL connection"Always On“ ?!* DSL service without a router :-You won't be connected as soon as you boot up your computer ,, Once your computer is started you have to connect to the service with the PPPoE client ,, After the connection process your computer will be online ..
-(Cont.) :-* DSL service with a router :- Yes ,, you are always on ..
-Can multiple computers share a DSL connection ?!*without a router :-This type of setup is not designed to support multiple connections ,, It is possible to have multiple computers share the DSL connection but a Router is the correct way to share a connection ..
(Cont.) :-*with a router :-Yes it is possible to have multiple computers share the DSL connection ,, The customer is responsible for configuring the computers on his LAN ..
-If I move to a new house but keep the same phone number ,, will the DSL service follow me to my new house ?!* The DSL service is connected with your phone line ,, NOT the phone number ..
-(Cont.) :-* If you move ,, you will need to contact your DSL Service Provider and advise them of your move and let them know you would like to move the DSL service to your new address ,, They will need to put in a request for your new line with the DSL service ..
-Is my computer safe from hackers or viruses while I'm connected through DSL ?!* People who make the jump to broadband often leave themselves open to online prowlers ,, hackers & identity thieves..
-(Cont.) :-* In the old days ,, a computer with weak security was vulnerable only during the short periods it was on the Net ,, But with "Always On" broadband service ,, it's like leaving a door wide open around the clock ..
-So how do you protect yourself ?!* The solution is to develop safe Net habits :-1- Don't open attachments you aren't expecting ,, especially when they come from people you don't know ..
-(Cont.) :-2- Use anti-virus software and install a firewall on your computer ,, especially if you have a broadband connection ..
