FAPE • Free and Appropriate Public Education • Based on student’s unique individual needs • Provides supports and services designed to permit student to benefit from instruction (i.e. make educational progress) • Details of supports and services are spelled out in the student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) • Continuum of services required by federal and state law • Occurs in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)
Least Restrictive Environment • The LRE mandate requires that all students in special education be educated with typical peers to the greatest extent possible • Intended to prevent unnecessary segregation of students with disabilities • Research supports that students with disabilities tend to have more success when they have access to typical peers

BOCES Programs First strand: Students with cognitive, developmental, and/or behavioral challenges.
BOCES Programs Second strand: Students with highly intensive emotional and behavioral needs, perhaps with a mental health diagnosis.
BOCES Programs Third strand: Students with significant learning disabilities and cognitive deficits that require a modified academic program, and possibly a vocational component.

Focus for 2010-2011: Our department’s focus for the 2010-11 school year supports the district’s literacy goals. • To improve literacy skills for identified students by utilizing assessment data to inform decisions on appropriate student placement, differentiate instruction, and utilize methodologies that provide targeted, research-based instruction in the least restrictive environment. • Support students and teachers in accessing assistive technology that allows students to compensate for deficit areas.
