2. BACKGROUND Capricorn Investment Holdings ( Botswana) (Pty) Limited is an investment holding company for a dynamic group of diversified services companies.
CIH Botswana (Pty) Ltd is a Botswana incorporated company registered in March 2002.
The company holds controlling interest in Bank Gaborone Limited , the Micro Finance and Broking group Penrich Employee Benefit and further holds 50% stake in SmartSwitch Botswana with the world leader in smart cards NET-1 U.E.P.S
The group holds a strong belief that a meaningful ownership of CIH Botswanas operations should vest with Botswana citizens. To this end, the National Manual Workers Union already hold 10% of the Penrich Employee Benefits group.

Capricorn Investment Holdings Limited (CIH), a leading Namibian financial services group and owner of Bank Windhoek Limited, took a strategic decision in 2002 to expand its banking operations into the SADC region.
Board of CIH Namibia took the view that Botswana was the most appropriate country in which to commence the groups cross border expansion programme.
Bank Gaborone Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Capricorn Investment Holdings (Botswana) (Pty) Limited in which CIH holds 88.55% interest.
7. Milestones
BoG reserves Botswana Limited, applied for a banking license in 2004.
Bank of Botswana conducted a series of inspections both at Bank Windhoek and at the proposed Bank Gaborone offices between the time of application and May 2005 when a temporary banking license was issued.
Bank Gaborone Limited was issued with a full commercial Banking license on the 1st February 2006.
The final go ahead to open our first branch was given in August 2006 and we opened it on the18th September 2006.

9. SmartSwitch Botswana SmartSwitch Botswana was formed in 2006 to introduce both financial and non-financial products through the application of smart card technology to those excluded from main stream banking.
Successful deployment of smart cards technology would facilitate the payment of value from employers and payment system owners.
SmartSwitch Botswana are in joint venture between Capricorn Investment Holdings ( Botswana) and Net-1 Limited, with equal shareholding.Net-1 is the developer of its patented universal electronic payment system (UEPS).
Net-1 provides the technological know how and backup to SmartSwitch Botswana and has been integrally involved in the setup and launch of the company
10. SmartSwitch Botswana Cont.
. SmartSwitch Botswanas vision is to deploy a universal electronic payment system that effects and manages a variety of financial and non-financial smart card applications designed to improve access to cash for the under-banked and unbanked population of Botswana.
SmartSwitch seeks to offer the citizens of Botswana access to financial services and products, irrespective of whether they reside in urban, semi-rural or deep rural areas irrespective of the income levels.
The primary purpose of SmartSwitch Botswana is to deliver an alternative method to affordable banking to citizens regardless of the Financial position.
11. PENRICH GROUP The founders of the Penrich Group recognized this need and founded a financial service offering in partnership with a leading union. As such the National Manual Workers Union 10% of the shares of Penrich Employee Benefits group.

12. PENRICH EMPLOYEE BENEFITS
Penrich Employee Benefits is a Botswana-based company, established in 1999, that was awarded the first and exclusive deduction code by the Accountant General through the Department of Public Finance to provide term loans to industrial class workers in Botswana. The Company has contract with a number of Botswanas major labour unions, government organisations and non-government organisations for the provision of financial services, mainly unsecured loans to their members and employees.

In September 2002, Penrich Employee Benefits purchased Peo Micro (PTY) LTD. Peo Micro provides loans to the Government Permanent and Pensionable market.
Products on offer include short Term Loans, Top-Up loans for existing clients and Peo Elite.
