  2. Can I still get Pregnant? • Fibroids can make it difficult to conceive, they are a known cause of infertility. • Once fibroids are treated, there is an increased chance of having a baby. • UFE has allowed many women who thought that there was no hope of having a baby to conceive. • Some of these women were advised to have a hysterectomy (surgical removal of the womb), yet they opted for fibroid embolisation and went on to get pregnant and have normal healthy babies.

  3. The commonest cause for hysterectomy is uterine fibroid disease. A hysterectomy involves surgical removal of the uterus and is a permanent intervention that means letting go of the chance to have a baby naturally. Many of the patients that come to us still want the opportunity to have a child.

  4. Some have been actively trying and failing to get pregnant. When the UFE procedure was first proposed there was a lot of literature warning against the unknown impact of UFE on fertility. Evidence as to whether there would be any complications on a growing foetus hadn’t been compiled yet.

  5. Since then many women have successfully had healthy children after. Medical interventions are advancing all the time and keeping up to date with research is important. We have treated many women who have safely had children when they were initially told it would not be possible and that their only option was to remove their uterus.

  6. If there is any doubt, we can arrange a consultation with one of our fertility specialists or obstetricians. We have a network of gynecologists available to give you expert advice.
