  1. Now What???? • You’re connected to the Data Warehouse. • You have access to a database. • You’ve selected /trained on a query tool . • You need to start your first query…….. • Now What????

  2. Learning the Data • Understanding the information that resides in each table within the database that you will be using will take time. • Since all databases have numerous tables, you should concentrate first on the tables that you’ll be using most often.

Learning the Data • The Data Warehouse web page offers information to assist users in developing queries, troubleshooting problems, and how to get help. • The following slides, will discuss various aspects of the Data Warehouse web pages. After you have completed this presentation, make sure you take the time to review the Data Warehouse Web Pages yourself!

  5. Learning the Data • The Data Warehouse Web Pages consist of 6 main topics: • General Information • Getting Started • How to Connect • About the Data • Important News • Need Help

  6. Learning the Data General Information covers information on what a Data Warehouse is, and information on Penn State’s Data Warehouse.

  7. Learning the DataGetting Started • Getting Started offers a road map to assist users in getting connected to the Data Warehouse. This listing begins with what we feel you’ll need to consider first, second etc. Lets look at the topics covered under Getting Started: Obtaining access to the Data Warehouse This topic gives you specific information on what you’ll need to do to get access to a specific database.

Learning the DataGetting Started Prerequisites for using the DW This topic tells you what prerequisites are required before you can get access to the Data Warehouse Connecting to the Data Warehouse Gives you detailed information on what you will need and how to configure your PC to connect to the Data Warehouse as well as technical info on how to do it.

  9. Learning the DataGetting Started Select a Query Tool Gives a brief overview of the current query tools being used at Penn State. Learning the Query Tool Provides information on the current training opportunities for various query tools.

  11. Learning the DataThe DocumentationSelect the Database Name on the left to get a listing of the tables.

  12. The Warehouse Database List gives you information about each database on the Data Warehouse. It also includes a Point of Contact. To get a listing of the tables in each database, you would click on the button on the left, scroll to the bottom of this screen and select tables.

  15. Learning the DataThe Documentation • It is important to review the descriptions of each table and field for the databases that you will be using. • This will help you begin to understand the data and can be a constant reference if you have questions.

  16. Learning the DataThe Documentation • It is important to note whether a field has a codeset assigned to it. If so, this field will have various values in it that could make a difference to you on the records you retrieve.

  17. Learning the DataThe Documentation • Here’s what you’ll need to do if you want to see the values of a codeset. • If a codeset is listed next to the field name (under the codeset heading) click on the codeset name and the values of the codeset will appear.

  18. Learning the DataThe Documentation Here is a partial listing of the codeset CLOCN for the code-camp field (campus location). The code located on the left hand side (for example AA) is short for Altoona.

  19. Learning the DataGetting Started Formulate Your Query This heading gives you access to sample queries that have been designed for various database. Assistance Gives you information about how to get help when you have a question.

  20. Learning the DataHow to Connect How to Connect gives you very specific information on how to set up your computer to connect to the data warehouse. Detailed instructions are given to help you get your computer configured to connect to the Data Warehouse.

  21. Learning the DataUpdate Schedules About the Data covers information that relates to the databases and tables and their update frequencies. Database Table Update Summary This tab gives you the last date and time a table within a database was updated. This can be very useful when you are preparing a query. Most databases are refreshed weekly, but not all.

  22. Learning the DataUpdate Schedules Database Table Update Frequency The table will give you information on how often the various tables are updated. Weekly, once a semester, twice a month, etc.

  23. Learning the DataImportant News • Important News gives information on any current events that affect the Data Warehouse. From training, seminars to information on user group meetings.

  24. Learning the DataNeed Help • ‘Need help’ offers information on user groups, listservs and the Data Warehouse database contact list. Any of these resources can be used to ask questions. • There is a Knowledge Base which offers sample queries, answers to commonly asked questions, etc.
