123: a required course for BME concentrators • “Design” in the title → • open-ended lab challenges answered by selecting parts for and building solutions to meet specs • EN123 also takes the place of EN52 for BME→ • we provide you with understanding of circuits as a natural part of the course…
Hands - on • Hands on what? • More parts and equipment than any other course you’ll have at Brown • More tools: soldering irons to logic probes • Craftsmanship not necessary • Safety guidelines: Safety Lab
Themes/Topics • Design: meeting specs with engineering trade-offs: range vs sensitivity example • Transducers • Sensors: transduce from various energy sources to VOLTAGE: thermistors, strain gauges, phototransistors, skin electrodes... • neurological vs man-made sensors • Actuators: Convert electrical signal to mechanical or thermal energy • Amplifiers: op amps and instrumentation amplifiers • Electrical Safety: Physiological Effects of Current on the Heart • Filtering out noise • Sampling Theorem • DAQ: data acquisition hardware: Analog to Digital conversion • Software & virtual instruments: LabVIEW • Data Analysis: FFT spectrum analysis, Statistical data analysis: Hypothesis testing, student’s t-test • Electrochemistry underlying the fabrication of EKG and other electrodes • Automatic Control: Virtues of negative feedback • Rotating machinery as tachometer or motor
Prerequisites • BME Engin Core or equivalent:esp. diff eq & Laplace xform in AM33 • Consider EN123 as a worthy substitute for EN52--Circuits • Co-req:123 online tutorials→basic electricity, etc. • EN123 is self-contained example: sample code for Arduino
What not to expect in EN123: • Problem Sets • Lab Reports • Midterms • Final Exam • $100+ textbook
ContractGrading • Which Labs and Quizzes qualify you for a C / S • Which Labs and Quizzes qualify you for a B • How to end up with an A: The 44% Rule; CPR for “A-”the EN123 spreadsheet, and scoreboard • No cookbook labs • No partial credit • Fault-tolerance question FTQ • Your scorecard (2014) 50% JDD / DAB signatures… • Index cards for backup documentation • Published A-path scores • Lab Partner, team name: by color, by horse name? • Guaranteed Appearance Time; Calendar • Documentation of your work: IP folder: ABET
“You didn’t build that!” • Slogan from 2012 presidential election • Reducing frustration in the C/B pathway • We can build your entire lab for you… • If you have become frustrated enough to be on the far side of the Yerkes-Dodson curve… • If the black squirrelhas visited your setup… • We may ask if you understand what we did, repairing your circuit, • Then we might disassemble it… • Not an option on A-path labs…

“The 168 hour final” • 14 weeks * 12 hr/wk = 168 hours • 3 hr lecture + 1 hour quiz + 8 hours lab
TA help • TAs→→ who took EN123 in 2013… • Emily, Pawel, Jenna … • Supplemental grad student TAs • Paul Waltz, Senior Tech support, 4 hr/day
Guaranteed Appearance Time One time / (1 hour?) when we ask you what Emperor Joseph asked Mozart: “What do you have for me today, Mozart?” You are guaranteed the full attention JD/DB at your GAT. If we are more than 5 min late you receive a GOOFTQF card: “Get Out Of Fault Tolerance Question Free” card http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ciFTP_KRy4
The EN123 website • http://www.brown.edu/Departments/Engineering/Courses/En123/index.html • Updated now for new contract… • Scorecard, with links to lab write-ups: printed out • Lecture notes • Calendar—GAT & lab partners • Review of Core material including video narrations… • Captured Images (of 123 alums…)
ABET material to be collected • We will be collecting for the next ABET BME accreditation visit examples of student work: • You may be interviewed by examiners 2014 • For each Lab: LabVIEW vi’s and other material (spreadsheets, solved equations, etc); some evidence of FTQ oral answers… • Quizzes: both correct and incorrect answers • WRIT essays, before and after re-writing
Who are you? • Pre-enrollment: 30 → 15 teams? • Attending first day: 40+ • Stay enrolled ‘til the add/drop deadline to claim a free EN123 T-shirt! and AC for Indian summer… • Photo gallery for name-face recognition… • Trying to take EN51 at the same time? Can be done: go to 51 lectures… see me…
Resistance, and Ohm’s Law Tutorial, on web • Node admittance matrix to solve a circuit for all node voltages • Quiz 0 handed out, and on the website, and sent out by email from jdd8990@gmail.com
What to do now? • Look over LabVIEW, and try Lab Zero, then Lab 0.5 • Labs open now, with LabVIEW running on 9 computers… • Quiz 0: an EN52-type question… • Study website: …Maslow’s Hierarchy • We will give you a printed-out scorecard… • Next Lecture: Solution to Lab 0.5 in LabVIEW
A word about the video narrations: https://mediacapture.brown.edu:8443/ess/portal/section/cf1219a2-2408-4a17-9812-4214a206ad43
A word about LabVIEW 2013: We have lately finished installing LabVIEW 2013 on 9 machines most running WIN 7, 64 bit. Up to now we have been using LabVIEW 7.1, from 2006… Brown has now paid National Instruments for a site license, and we get good tech support from Nat’l Inst. of Austin Texas. Labs have been edited to take account of the different way the DAQ card 6024E is accessed by the iconic LabVIEW functions palette… May be some vexations and setbacks during the semester in the establishment of LV2013 as the DAQ standard…
EN123 is a WRIT course: We did say there are no lab reports, right? But we do want you to improve your writing skills… As a WRIT course EN123 requires that every student write two 500 or so word essays on themes from Bioengineering, suggested by us or favored by you… Make sure your essay printout is double spaced! That essay will be marked up for “improvements” by JD or DB and given back to you… You will revise the essay taking into account the markups. Return your revised essay and the original marked up one… you’re finished! Bonus points for particularly well written essays… You will be able to use EN123 as proof to the Dean of the College and Associate Dean Kathleen McSharry that in your Jr/Sr years you continued to improve your writing… …a requirement for graduation from Brown. A link on the index page for 123 has details about the WRIT requirement…
Next: • Virtual Tour of Lab • Intro to LabVIEW, and answer to Lab 0.5 • Lecture: Amplifiers: From ideal to real
By the end of EN123 we hope: EN123 has been the best course you took this semester. EN123 will be the best engin course of your four years here. And you will be Walking on Sunshine:
Inspired by the WRIT requirement:EN123 has a theme song: • Help Me Maybe • Lyrics by Erica K and Catherine B;vocals by Chattertocks (Dec 2012) • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upK_ckHN6Lw

Ethics/Quizzes/Academic Code/ABET • There will be ten 1-question/1-answer quizzes in EN123, only one of which you’re required to answer correctly to pass the course • Most submissions of quiz answers are by email. Each student’s answer is time-stamped. • If you submit the same WRONG answer as someone else who submitted before you, we may ask you in person to show your work… • Regarding LabVIEW VIs, we would like to see that each person’s/team’s VI has a different size than any other… • Students are allowed to consult each other on how to solve lab challenges, but should not copy work whole cloth, or “borrow” an already-built circuit…
