Mobile Language Learning: Perception of Success among Self-regulated Learners MEITAL Conference 2019 Julieta Echeverria and Anat Cohen
The purpose of the study • Understand the main characteristics that guarantee success for free learners in a mobile language environment • Explore the impact of SRL different levels in the result Self-regulated Learning Perception of Success Usage of the online App or website
Self-regulated Learning (SRL) Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) • One of the main advantages attributed to it is the possibility of access to relevant information at all times, the flexibility it grants in time and space, an adaptation of personal habits, among others (Kukulska-Hulme, 2012). • Self-regulated learners are distinguished by their personal initiatives associated with motivation and a metacognitive aspect (Zimmerman, 2008)
Research Questions Q1.What is the relationship between a high profile of SRL and their usage of the mobile app or website? Q2. What is the relationship between the use of the app or website and the perception of success for self-regulated learners? Q3. Which characteristics of a self-regulated learner are highlighted in those who perceive a greater success in their learning experience?
Data collection and instrument The research instrument is an online survey (in Spanish and English) • 1) Demographic data • 2) Usage of app or website • 3) Experience as a self-regulated learner • 4) Perception of learning success The survey was published on social network groups mostly integrated by immigrants and also distributed between acquaintances. Young adults between 20 and 35 years old. They must have at least one experience or attempt at being free learners of foreign languages.
Methodology • The research study was conducted with a quantitative approach • 166 surveys were collected globally since the research instrument was developed in two different languages • The focus is on the experience itself and not on the language chosen to be learned
Demographic data What is the highest degree or level of school you have completed? How many languages do you speak?
Findings The relationship between a high profile of SRL and their usage of the mobile app or website. • No strong relationship between a high profile of SRL and their usage of the mobile app or website. • Medium correlation between the frequency of use of the application and the respondents’ belief about their ability to act in a certain way to attain their goals (r=0.297, p<0.05). • Medium correlation between the level of perseverance and sharing experiences with other users (r=0.275, p<0.01). • A low correlation between the frequency of the use of the application and the setting of goals to manage the learning (r=0.198, p<0.05).
Findings The relationship between the use of the app or website and the perception of success • A medium-strong correlation between the general perception of success and how long the student has been using the app (r=0.306, p<0.001), • A medium-strong correlation between the general perception of success and the time spent using the app during each session (r=0.343, p<0.001).
Findings The highlighted characteristics of a self-regulated learner in those who perceive a greater success in their learning experience • A strong correlation between the level of SRL and the perception of success (r=0.508, p<0.001). • A strong correlation between those who perceive a greater success and those who try again after failing (r=0.385, p<0.001). • A strong correlation between those who perceive a greater success and those who have a will to learn and see learning as a positive path (r=0.358, p<0.001).
Conclusions for further research • How and when does the development of successful SRL skills occur? • How will mobile language learning environments take advantage of learners skills and guarantee them success in their learning process?
