Introduction • The gospel of John is remarkably unique. • The greatest evidence for belief to be found • Gives evidence for a burning faith • Gives hope for a lost world • Gives power to overcome Satan and sin • The most marvelous biography of the most matchless life • The most unusual & most valuable of the gospel accounts • The deepest and most spiritual book in the Bible • A commentary and exposition of the whole Bible • It is a simple and profound gospel. • A picture gallery of Christ

Introduction • Compared to Matthew, Mark and Luke, there are these unique traits: • 92% of the book is not found in other accounts • More than half the book is events of Jesus’ last days. • Nearly 1/3 of the book deals with Jesus’ last day. • John mostly records events that took place in Judea. • Gives 20 days out of 1,000 days of our Lord’s ministry.

Introduction • John emphasizes the personal relationship of Jesus to individuals. • John notes 27 personal interviews/conversations of Jesus. • John emphasizes the Fatherhood of God and the Sonship of Jesus. • Christ speaks of God as “The Father” more than 100 times. • John emphasizes many matters not otherwise recorded • Words emphasized throughout the gospel account: • Believe (principal appeal in the gospel) – 98 times • Father – more than 100 times • Love – 46 times • Life, light, darkness, work, world, flesh, hour, truth, true, hate, receive, take away, send, beginning, know, glory, glorify, witness, abide

Author: The Apostle John • John shared a special relationship/close association with Jesus • During the days of the early church: • he suffered severe persecution but never wavered • he was regarded as one of “the pillars of the church” • He spent much of his later life in Ephesus. • Exiled to Patmos during the fiery persecution of Domitian, where he penned the book of Revelation. • During the reign of Trajan, he was allowed to return to Ephesus. • He lived to a ripe old age, dying near 100 years old.

Recipients & Date of the Writing • Matthew, Mark & Luke were written earlier • Matthew wrote originally for the Jew • Emphasizing Christ’s kingship, as a descendent of Abraham • Mark wrote for the Roman • Emphasizing Christ’s servantship • Luke wrote for the Greek • Emphasizing Christ’s humanity, as a descendant of Adam

Recipients & Date of the Writing • John wrote for us all, a universal gospel • Emphasizing Christ’s deity, as a descendent of God Himself • He filled in details not recorded by the earlier writers. • John wrote for a later generation of Christians far removed from the scenes & events he described. • A universal flavor dominates its pages. • Written long after Matthew, Mark & Luke • Most believe in last years of first century = 97-98 A.D.

The Purpose of the Gospel of John • “And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.” – John 20:30-31 • SIGNS – revelation of God thru teaching & miracles • Each sign chosen to prove the deity of Jesus • BELIEVE – reaction the signs designed to produce • Tense implies continual process. But belief is not the end. • LIFE – result that true belief brings, outcome desired • The “abundant life” of a Christian & “eternal life” in heaven

Evidence to Prove the Deity of Christ • The Testimony of Old Testament Types • The Serpent in the Wilderness is a type of the Cross of the Christ (Num. 21:5-9; John 3:14-15). • The Manna in the Wilderness is a type of the True Bread from God (Ex. 16:14-15; John 6:32-35). • Jacob’s Ladder to Heaven is a type of the Christ, who is the Ladder for Men to Heaven (Gen. 28:10-17; John 1:51).
