  1. Newton’s First Law of Motion12/2/13 – 12/6/13 12/2 Newton’s 1st Law of Motion WB p. 76 HW: TB p 138 #1-6 in NB 12/3 Newton’s 2nd law of Motion WB p.77-84 12/4 Newton’s 1st and 2nd law of Motion / Quiz

  2. Goal: I can review and explain Newton’s first and second Law of Motion Bell Ringer: Write out the following equations using words. For example: v=d/t Velocity equals distance divided by time GPE= mgh a= vf-vi/t KE=1/2 mv2

  3. Today’s Activiy • Complete the data table on 75. • Complete a conclusion on page 76 in the WB based on my observations. • Review WB p.77-80

  4. Constant Force DataWB p. 75 .108 m/s/s .025 m/s/s .018 m/s/s .008m/s/s

  5. Support for the Conclusion WB p.76 The cart started out slow and moved faster Claim based on evidenceEvidence (observation) • When a constant force acts on an object_______ _____________________ • When the mass of an object is increased and the magnitude of the force on the object remains constant its acceleration___________ _______________________ it accelerates As we added more mass, the cart started out fast and moved slower decreases

  6. Conclusion WB p. 76 My claim is _____________________________ _____________because___________________ __________________________________________ __________________________________________ Another claim is ____________________________ __________________________________________ ___________________________because________ __________________________________________ __________________________________________ when a constant force acts on an object it accelerates the cart in our activity accelerated when a constant force was applied to it. when the mass of an object is increased and the magnitude of the force on the object remains constant, its acceleration decreases I have also seen this in life when………

  7. Goal: I can review and explain Newton’s first and second Law of Motion Bell Ringer: A ball rolls from point A to B. Explain how the ball’s KE and GPE will be different from position A and B A B

  8. Goal: I can review and explain Newton’s first and second Law of Motion As a class complete WB p. 76

  9. Goal: I can review and explain Newton’s first and second Law of Motion Independently read and annotate WB p. 77-80 12min

  10. Workbook p. 81 Complete with your face partner Partner A completes 1 Partner B completes 2 Share your answer with your partner, agree on the answer and write down the answer Continue this process through p. 81-82

  11. Goal: I can draw examples of Newton’s 1st and 2nd laws. Bell Ringer: What is the acceleration of the dog in the picture? F=ma

  12. Today’s Activity Create a poster of Newton’s First Law of Motion • State Newton’s First Law • Draw an example • Explain your example

  13. Name Period Date State Newton’s First Law • State Newton’s first law • Draw an examples Explain your example The blocks are at rest The blocks want to stay in motion

  14. Name Period Date State Newton’s 2ndLaw 2nd poster • State Newton’s 2nd law • Draw an examples Explain your example The force on the baseball is equal to the mass of the bat times the bat’s acceleration

  15. Newton’s 1st Law

  16. Newton’s 1st Law

  17. Newton’s 1st Law

  18. Newton’s 2nd Law

  19. What’s acceleration? Newton’s 2nd Law

  20. Newton’s 2nd Law

  21. Workbook p. 81 Complete with your face partner Partner A completes 1 Partner B completes 2 Share your answer with your partner, agree on the answer and write down the answer Continue this process through p. 81-82

  22. 11/29 Roller coaster project Textbook p. 404 • Target Audience • Drawing Top view and a side view • Calculations • Description of modifications to the roller coaster. Write 5 ideas • Include : mass of car, safety, GPE at top of the first hill, KE at the bottom of the first hill, velocity at several points

  23. Date: Goal: I can read a text and take Cornell Notes, identifying key terms, main ideas, and questions raised. Bell Ringer: Define centripetal force and give me an example of centripetal force.

  24. Today’s Activity • Read Workbook p. 88 • Take cornell notes in notebook. Topic: WB p. 88 • You have 4 minutes • Students will be asked to explain their notes

  25. Video • Read Workbook p. 89 • Take cornell notes in notebook. Topic: WB p. 89 • You have 4 minutes • Students will be asked to explain their notes Due Today Notebook and p. 85 of workbook will be collected at the end of class

  26. Date: 11/4/13 Objective: I can distinguish between mass and weight. I can also calculate weight in Newtons (N) Bell Ringer: • As the roller coaster travels from point A to B, how do its potential and kinetic energies change? • As the roller coaster travels from point D to E, how do its potential and kinetic energies change? A E B D C

  27. Date: 11/4/13 Objective: I can distinguish between mass and weight. I can also calculate weight in Newtons (N) Activity Titled : Textbook p. 392 Answer Investigate Part A questions 1-5 in your Notebook Answer questions with your shoulder partner. Both partners must write their answers

  28. DEFINITIONS Mass- the amount of matter an object has. Matter- something that has mass and takes up space. Weight- is the amount of mass of an object, it is dependent upon gravity. 1 pound (lbs)= .45 kilogram (kg)

  29. Look at this figure. The mass of the bowling ball does not change, but the mass of the puppy does. How? Where does the matter come from? Can the mass of the bowling ball ever change?

  30. Tennis ball House fly Elephant Place these 5 items in the order they would be the most attracted to the Earth due to gravity. Explain why you picked your order. peanut Bowling ball

  31. Exit Question What would happen to your mass and to your weight if you went to the moon? Explain how you arrived at your answer.

  32. Date: 11/5/13 Objective: I can investigate Newton’s first law of motion Bell Ringer: • What would happen to your mass and to your weight if you went to the moon? Explain how you arrived at your answer. • Calculate the weight of a 50kg ball? Fw=mg

  33. Tennis ball House fly Elephant Place these 5 items in the order they would be the most attracted to the Earth due to gravity. Explain why you picked your order. peanut Bowling ball

  34. 11/4/13 Activity Workbook page 65 Read demonstration as a group Complete workbook p.67 independently

  35. 11/5/12 Activity Complete workbook p.68

  36. Date: 11/6/13 Objective: I can understand Newton’s first law of motion and apply the concept to my daily life Bell Ringer: Based on our activity Yesterday, if the roller Coaster starts at point B What point will the cart Reach? D or E or F Explain why
