  2. Defining QG • QG is the task of automatically generating questions • Computational perspective • Supporting disciplines: psychology, formal logic, etc.

  3. Defining QG • QG as the task of automatically generating questions • Computational perspective • Supporting disciplines: psychology, formal logic, etc. Relation Output Input

  4. Defining QG • QG as the task of automatically generating questions • Computational perspective • Supporting disciplines: psychology, formal logic, etc. ? ? ? Relation Output Input

  5. Output • A question (syntactic, semantic, pragmatic?) • Semantic (expressing an informational gap): • Declarative questions: John opened the door? • Imperatives: Tell me who/what/why/whether … • Feeders: For more than a century and a half, X has been known • as the finest watch in the world. What is the reason for • this? • Non-verbal: This block? + pointing • Intonation: Did you SEE Mary? versus Did YOU see Mary. • Input • Declarative sentences (in context) • Also: pictures, diagrams, … ? (E.g., When did the steepest decline in sales take place?) • Relation • Question/Query reformulation • Input answers the output question • Input raises the output question • In: If John’s car is in the garage, he’s at home.
