This power point is full of multiplication properties, factors, strategies, and methods that will help you to better your skills and understanding of multiplication. Pages Repeated Addition Commutative Property Multiplication factor of zero Multiplication factor of one Two’s Five’s Ten’s MULTIPLICATION
Repeated Addition • Multiplication is repeated addition. What this means is multiplication is a fast way of adding a series of numbers. 3 x 5 means to add 3 together 5 times or3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 6 x 4 means 6 added together 4 times or6 + 6 + 6 + 6
Commutative Property • The commutative property of multiplication simply means it does not matter which number is first when you write the problem. The answer is the same. 3 x 5 = 5 x 3 (The numbers can be switched around and the answer is the same.) 4 x 7 = 7 x 4 1 x 9 = 9 x 1
Multiplication Factor of Zero • The zero multiplication facts Multiplication is repeated addition so: 0 x 3 = 0 + 0 + 0 = 0 0 x 7 = 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 = 0 Because of the commutative property of multiplication: 0 x 4 = 4 x 0 = 0 0 x 9 = 9 x 0 = 0
Multiplication Factor of One • The one multiplication facts Multiplication is repeated addition so: 1 x 4 = 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 4 1 x 2 = 1 + 1 = 2 1 x 5 = 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 5 3 x 1 = 3 9 x 1 = 9 Because of the commutative property of multiplication: 1 x 4 = 4 x 1 = 4 1 x 8 = 8 x 1 = 8
Two’s • The TWO multiplication facts Multiplication is repeated addition so: 4 x 2 = 4 + 4 = 8 (or 2 fours) 3 x 2 = 3 + 3 = 6 (or 2 threes) 5 x 2 = 5 + 5 = 10 (or 2 fives) Because of the commutative property of multiplication: 4 x 2 = 2 x 4 = 8 8 x 2 = 2 x 8 = 16Any number times two is the number doubled! 2 x 7 would be 7 + 7 or 14 6 x 2 would be 6 + 6 or 12
Fives • The FIVE multiplication facts (Method 1) If you can count by fives, method 1 makes the fives simple 5 x 3 would be 3 fives. Count by five to the third number. 5, 10, 15 (The answer is 15, because the third number, when you count by fives, is 15) 5 x 6 would be 6 fives. Count by fives to the sixth number. 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 (The answer is 30.) Because of the commutative property of multiplication: 5 x 3 = 3 x 5 = 15 5 x 6 = 6 x 5 = 30
Ten’s • The ten’s multiplication’s is a very easy thing to understand. Any number multiplied by ten just adds a zero at the end. For example: • 2 x 10 = 20 • 30 x 10 = 300 • 155 x 10 = 1550
