What is the Dictaphone? • A Dictaphone is a device which was mainly used to record speech. • It was also used to play back the speech and someone else would type it into print.
History of the Dictaphone • Dictaphone was a trademark originally registered by the Columbia Gramophone Company in 1907. • In 1923 it separated into a new company and continued manufacturing wax cylinder dictation equipment. • In 1947 the Dictabelt was created which replaced the Dictaphone.
Ediphone? • The Ediphone is like the Dictaphone, except made by Edison. • They were originally called the Phonograph and intended for business • The name was then changed to the Ediphonein 1916 to prevent confusion.
How the Dictaphone worked. • The technology that the Dictaphone used was similar to the phonograph except that it used paraffin coated cylinders used for recording. • The paraffin coated cylinders allowed for data to be erased and re-uses. “the first technology that allowed repeated erasures “ • Parrafin - A beeswax substitute derived from petroleum.
