In 1963 the Department of Audiovisual Instruction located in Washington, DC (later known as AECT) approved the first definition of educational technology: “the design and use of messages which control the learning process”.
Robert Mills Gagne (1916-2002) was an American educational psychologist best known for his “Conditions of Learning” published in 1965. The Gagne assumption that different types of learning exist, and that different instructional conditions are most likely to bring about these different types of learning.
Richard Atkinson and Richard Shriffin in 1968 both proposed a multistage, multistore theory of memory that is generally regarded as the basis for information processing theory. It is a model of memory that can be broken down into sub-models of memory: sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory.
