Expectations • What is expected from each family member can change during transition
Family Dynamics • Your family dynamics may change during your transition. Family members may have to play additional roles.
Language • The Military community’s language differs from the civilian community. Adapting may be difficult at first.
Routines • Adjusting to new routines may pose a challenge. Some will find the change exciting.
Responsibilities • Consider the fact that you may no longer be the family breadwinner during your transition.
Stress • During transition, stress will be similar to what you and your family faced during pre-deployment, deployment, and post-deployment periods during your military service.
Relocation • How will relocation affect immediate and external family members?
Finances • Income may change during transition. Discuss finances to determine needs versus wants.
Create a Personal Transition Schedule • You may find yourself spending more time at home during your transition than you did during your active duty service.
Spouse Career Goals • Communicate with your spouse and family to identify changes in education and career goals that may affect the entire family.
Environment / Community • Consider off-base resources to adjust to what your family may have become accustomed to in the military community.
Education / School • Consider creating a school transition plan for your children. Include the pros and cons of a new school system when determining your new location.
