An Introduction to Heraldry with Lierin Holly Hyghalmen Roll Late 1400s
The Plain Field – Tinctures and Shapes boys/families girls communities/nations/ states/etc “On a field/lozenge ________...”
Fancifying the Plain Field Murrey: (mulberry-coloured, or reddish purple), Sanguine: (blood-red) Tenne: (an orange-tawny) Carnation: (the colour of European human skin – most common in France), Bleu Celeste: (also ciel or celeste – sky-blue), Cendree: (dark grey) Eisen: (Iron)
Dividing the Field (“Divisions”) Party Per _____, 1st Gules, 2nd Argent Party Per _____, 1st and 4th Gules, 2nd and 3rd Argent (...or more commonly“Quarterly” instead of “per cross”)
Divisional Shapes (“Ordinaries”) Ordinary: A Geometric shape following a line of Division, but not acting as a Division “(On a Field) Azure, a Chevron Argent” “On a lozenge Purpure, A Pale Or” “Vert, a Cross Engrailed Argent” ^ *Note: You can use the same decorative embellishments shown for Lines of Partition on Subordinaries, etc
Little Ordinaries “Diminutives” Arms of Cardinal Richelieu: Argent, three chevronels gules.
Look at what we can do already! BARS: Diminuitives of the Ordinary “fess” CANTON: Subordinary, with default placing in the upper left corner STARS: intro to the next slide on Charges! :) “(On a field) Gules, Six Bars Argent; A Canton Azure with fifty stars Argent”
CHARGES! :) Any non geometric design or picture placed on the field. Animals Plants Inanimate objects
Charge “Attitudes” < How the head is facing can be applied to any other attitude
Charge Colours (“Tinctures”) Proper? Or not Proper? Gules, a Book with letters proper Azure, a Maunche Or Argent, A Boar's Head proper Vert, a Crown Argent
The Rule of Tincture Thou shalt NEVER place a Colour upon a Colour nor a Metal upon a Metal!!! (pretty please?) ...take a look at the previous slide
Exceptions to the Rule of Tincture Of course ... none of us are Kings ;) *Rule does not apply to divisions, and does not always apply to Ordinaries (although it is recommended for Ordinaries and less): A Primary Example:
Countercharging Placing colored charges (etc) over divided shields “Party per fess Argent and Azure, A Butterfly, Displayed, Countercharged” Chaucer family: “Per Pale Argent and Gules, a Bend Countercharged.”
Other Fancy Stuff (pt 1 of 2): Quartering! Shield inherited by the children + = (Peeress Wife) (Husband)
The Grenville Diptych: produced for Richard Temple-Grenville, Marquess of Chandos the son of the first Duke of Buckingham and Chandos between 1822 and 1839. The diptych shows 719 quarterings of the family. The left hand panel of the diptych lists the quarterings. These include ten variations of the English Royal arms, the arms of Spencer, De Clare, Valence, Mowbray, Mortimer, and De Grey, among others. This image is in the public domain. (Quoted from the English Wikipedia)
Other Fancy Stuff (pt 2): Marks of Cadency! (Can also add and Divide Borders to indicate Cadency and Generations)
Building a Personal Heraldic Achievement • Shape of Shield (are you a boy or a girl? :p) • Overall Color Scheme (start with one metal and one color) • Divisions? • If no divisions, how about Ordinaries, Diminutives, or Subordinaries? • Charges? • How many generations do you want to (should you) show? • Is your father alive, or have you inherited your shield? PLEASE REMEMBER!: This is YOUR personal familial shield. It should describe who your persona is. In tournaments etc, it would be the first impression you would be making on your fellow nobles. Let it be a reflection of YOU! You WILL have to memorize your shield, recite it in front of the club from time to time, and teach it to others ('cause it's your responsibility to make sure your people know your blazon)...remember that if you want to take a novel to blazon your shield :P
