No More Dead Dogs Cycle 3, Day 1
Agenda • Reading Goal: • As we read, we will identify conflicts for the characters. • Today’s Big Question: • How important is it to be cheered on when you are putting in a lot of effort? • Team Cooperation Goal: Explain ideas and tell why.
Conflict T-P-S • What do you think of when you hear the word conflict? • When we talk about a conflict in a story, what do we mean? • Have you ever read a story that had no conflict? What would a story with no conflict be like? • Name a children’s story and what the big problem that the main character has to deal with (like The Three Pigs, Cinderella)
Types of Conflict T-P-S • Name the types of conflict: • At the beginning of this novel, what would you say is a conflict for Wallace Wallace? • What type of conflict is this? • What conflict launches the action of the story? What kind of conflict is it?
Listening • Listen to pgs 123-128 • Listen to think aloud. • T-P-S • Why do you think Cavanaugh showed up at Wallace’s house during the leaf raking? • Since Cavanaugh is not one of the narrators in this story, we don’t get to see things from his point of view. Do you think Cavanaugh may be dealing with a conflict?
Partner read: 128-137 • Why does Wallace go to see Coach Wrigley? How do you think Wallace feels about Coach Wrigley’s response? • Identify the conflict at the end of page 131. What type of conflict is this? (write) • Mr. Fogelman is taking a new approach to life. Describe his new approach. Do you think this approach makes sense or is he making a mistake? Why? • On page 137 Mr. Fogelman says, “The only thing that can sink us is ourselves.” What do you think he means by this statement?
Reflection # heads • The football team is losing game after game. How do you think that affects the team’s attitude? • When he talks to Cavanaugh on page 128, Wallace compares the football team to the drama club. What does he say about the effort of each group? • When you can’t see any success, is it more difficult to give something your best effort? • How important is it to be cheered on when you are putting in a lot of effort? • Vocab Review
