Feudalism • King needs the help of his upper class friends – The nobles • The result is Feudalism • A loosely organized system of government based on TRUST and LOYALTY • It is a Give and Get system • Monarch gives land to a lord (Called a vassal) • Monarch gets protection and loyalty
Fief • Land = Fief • It includes everything on the land; buildings, fields, crops, peasants, animals Manorial System Manor – used or usable part of the fief – includes castle/manor house and surrounding lands • Manor is the center of social and economic life
Manor • Serfs • Peasants and serfs the basic labor force • Give Labor and Get – Land to farm and protection KNIGHTS Give – Military Service Get – Place to live and food Follow Code of Chilvary
