Newspaper Coverage Report University Communications May 9, 2011
Newspaper coverage analysis • Media reporting searched via LexisNexis and Tribune databases • Should be viewed solely as directional and for comparative purposes • Does not reflect the quality of media reporting • Schools compared • Illinois Wesleyan, Illinois State and Augustana • Kalamazoo College and Western Michigan • Newspapers examined • Pantagraph, Tribune, Sun-Times, Daily Herald and Kalamazoo Gazette
Observations • IWU is very competitive with ISU in terms of Pantagraph coverage • Overall, both schools have seen coverage decline about 20% over the past 10 years, which is likely due to less local news reporting in general • For perspective, Kalamazoo College does not get near the coverage we do in a very similar situation • IWU has very good share of news mentions in Chicago • Very competitive with ISU in all papers • Much better than Augie in all papers • Athletics drives the Chicago coverage
