Write proper chemical formulas for reactants and products • Add coefficients to change # of atoms, but do not change subscripts • Keep polyatomic ions together if they appear on both sides of the equations • Balance single elements (like H2, O2 or metals) last • Check that each element is balanced • Be sure that coefficients are in the lowest whole number ratio possible
