  1. Nuclear fission is the process of splitting atoms. • This happens by neutrons hitting atoms and producing fission products which are unstable and so release more neutrons. • A chain reaction can happen if there are lots of atoms close to each other. A neutron is released from one atom and so it hits more atoms which then release more neutrons starting a chain effect. • Nuclear fission happens every day in atoms such as uranium which constantly undergoes spontaneous fission and this is why it emits radiation.
