“Why the Heck are we doing this FACE LAB?” • Question: • List the traits you have inherited (that you were given from your parents) • Question: • Did you get to pick your traits?
25 Seconds Remaining How many genes do you have? • 1 • 2 • 4 • 23 • 46 • 2,300 • 3,200 • 32,000
25 Seconds Remaining Where are these traits (GENES) located? • Chromosomes • In Parents • Cellular Membrane • DNA
Remember! • You get 1 chromosome per trait from your mom. • You get 1 chromosome per trait from your dad. • Therefore, you have chromosome(s) per trait.
Look at your lab • Why are there two letters written for each trait? • Each letter represents a gene from each parent • Capital Letters represent DOMINANT genes • Lower case represent recessive genes
Face Shape • A combination of letters represents the combination of genes that were inherited. This is a GENOTYPE. • What does Rr look like for face shape? • Round – R is dominant allele • What does rr look like for face shape? • Square – r shows up because it is the recessive allele • How the genes actually look expressed in the organism is called its PHENOTYPE.
Genotypes • The combination of genes that make up a genotype can be either • Homozygous • Both genes are either dominant or both are recessive • Example: RR or dd • Heterozygous • There is each type of gene is represented • Example: Rr or Dd
25 Seconds Remaining What are the possible genotypes for Chin Shape? • CC • cc • Cc • All of the above • None of the above
25 Seconds Remaining Which genotype is heterozygous? • Cleft Chin • CC • No Cleft Chin • Cc
25 Seconds Remaining Which phenotype is homozygous dominant? • CC • Cleft Chin • Cc • No Cleft Chin
Self Quiz • What was your kid’s genotype for widow’s peak? • What are the possible phenotypes for eye size? • W= Green Leaves & w = white leaves in corn plants. If a corn plant is Ww, then what would its phenotype be? • Is the corn plant in question #3, heterozygous or homozygous? • Where do the corn plants get their genes?
Types of Inheritance • Dominant/Recessive • Type of inheritance where there is a pure dominant allele and pure recessive allele • Co-Dominant/Incompletely Dominant • Type of inheritance where the alleles are equal or mostly equal. There is not a pure dominant or pure recessive allele • Polygenic • Type of inheritance where there is more than one gene that controls the trait.
Face Lab Conclusion • WARNING: This is a “quality” assignment, you must get a B or you will get it back for corrections. • Label the traits on the face lab as D/R, CoD or Poly. • Tell the story of how genes are passed on to make facial traits. Use a specific example along with the words below. • Meiosis • Genes • Chromosome • Genotype • Phenotype
Predicting which gene you get • Face Shape = R: (Alleles = R – Round, r - Square) • Parent #1 genotype is Rr • Parent #2 genotype is rr • They want to have a child: • Parent #1 can pass on a or • Parent #2 can pass on a or • To keep everything straight we use a PUNNETT SQUARE
Parent #1 Parent #2 Punnett Square • Each Box is worth a 25% or 1 out of 4 R r R r r r r r R r r r
Problem • You have two heterozygous parents that each have Almond shaped eyes. They are having a baby. What are the possible genotypes it could have and the possibility of getting each one? • What are the possible phenotypes and the chances?
