These slides are taken from a larger discussion that occurred at a recent Science Vertical Team meeting. • Please email me if you have any questions. • Thank you, • Paul Monaco
(Slide adapted from DESE slide Jan 2013)What is NGSS?National Research Council, National Science Teachers Association, American Association for the Advancement of Science, & Achieve collaborated: MA Adoption www.nextgenscience.org www7.nationalacademies.org/bose/Standards_Framework_Homepage.html www.doe.mass.edu/omste/review.html MA STE Review Panel (State Revision Process)
The NGSS & The Stance of MA • According to a recent presentation given by a member of the DESE, the following is a potential timeline for the development of new science standards: • Public draft of NGSS (May, 2012; Jan, 2013) • Final version of NGSS (~March 2013) • Discussion of whether this is viable for MA (~early 2013) • There are pros and cons to consider
Public comment draft of revised standards for the Board of Education (~ fall 2013) • Final STE standards adopted (~ winter 2013) • Dissemination & implementation (~ 2013 – 2015/16) • MCAS Assessment Development Committees (every year) • So the Science MCAS should reflect these new standards by 2015/16.
What Do We Know About What The New Standards Will Look Like? • They will be called something in reference to MA specifically. • ie. MA Science Standards • They will have practices and content in them, but unsure about cross cutting concepts. • They will have links to math and literacy standards.
What Do We Know About What The New Standards Will Look Like? • Technology & Engineering will be its own strand! • Considered a discipline of science (rather than a skill that can be incorporated into science.) • MA will break out PreK through 5, but still unsure about 6-8. • Concept of college and career ready needs to be clarified.
