Agenda/Topics To Be Covered The students will identify the significant changes brought about during the Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson presidencies by comparing and contrasting the decisions of each President Warm-up Question: Read the time line on pages 116-117 and answer the following questions: Which event happened first-the Louisiana Purchase or Thomas Jefferson’s reelection as president? Who was President when the War of 1812 began? Motivation: What issues, personalities and events have dominated the era in which you live? What name or title might summarize this era?

  3. The Jeffersonian Era Ch. 3 Sec. 1 Jefferson’s Presidency Election of 1800-2 candidates received the same number of electoral votes? What happens next? Election is decided by the House of Representatives The development of the 12 amendment to choose President and Vice-President with separate electoral votes.

The Removal of Native Americans The Indian Removal Act Provided funds to negotiate treaties that would force the Natives to move west. 90 Treaties signed Cherokee nation sued in court and won, but Jackson refused to enforce the decision Trail of Tears 1838 Van Buren ordered the removal of 20,000 Cherokee More than ¼ died along the way to Indian Territory

Tariffs, States’ Rights and the National Bank Nullification Crisis Result of the Tariff of 1816 Britain decreased its exports to the U.S. Britain decreased its imports of U.S. cotton as a response South Carolina attempted to nullify the Federal law South Carolina nullified another Tariff of 1832 and President Jackson became enraged A compromise lowered the Tariff over a 10 year period and prevented South Carolina from seceding

  14. Jackson’s Bank War Wanted to decrease the role of the Bank of the US Allowed the charter to run out in 1836 Jackson pulled the federal money out of the bank and placed it into state banks. Bank President called in the loans and refused to make new loans. This put many merchants and manufacturers into bankruptcy.

  15. Independent Practice Read the quote on page 127 from Thomas Jefferson. How might the Missouri Compromise lead to conflict?

  17. Homework • Read Chapter 3 Section 1 and 2 for Thursday, if we have books for you to take home. • Begin preparing for test on Tuesday or Wednesday September 20th or 21st.
