ShahriarEmami, Samsung Improving Packet Energy Efficiency Using ULP Mode
ShahriarEmami, Samsung Proposal For both PHY options, the packet energy efficiency for short packets is quite poor. A simple procedure to improve the energy efficiency of both options is proposed. It requires definition of a ULP signaling bit in the PHY header. In this mode previous parameters are used. Unused bandwidth is used to send more data. • For both PHY options, the packet energy efficiency for short packets is quite poor. • A simple procedure to improve the energy efficiency of both options is proposed. • It requires definition of a ULP bit in the PHY header. • In ULP mode previous parameters are used. ShahriarEmami, Samsung PHY Header ULP • To improve efficiency, PHY header can be used for data transmission as well. • Use one bit of PHY header as ULP signaling indicator (either PHR7 or PHR11 can be used). • In ULP state (ULP = 1), previous frame header parameters will be used. With the exception of PH7 (or PHR11) all other bits are used to carry data • In non- ULP state (ULP = 0), a new frame header will be used
ShahriarEmami, Samsung Energy Efficiency for Short Packets(VSF-TOOK) • The energy efficiency for short packets • (5 bytes long) is quite poor (10.6%). • Using this approach packet efficiency increases by 40%. • Equivalent to increasing battery life by 40%.
ShahriarEmami, Samsung ULP-GFSK PHY Header ULP • The DW field is ignored in the ULP-GFSK proposal. One can use it to signal the ULP mode. • When (ULP = 1), previous frame header will be used. Frame length field carries data. • In non-ULP state (ULP = 0), a new frame header will be used. • .
ShahriarEmami, Samsung Energy Efficiency for Short Packets(ULP-GFSK) • The energy efficiency for short packets • (5 bytes long) is quite poor (45%) • Packet efficiency can be increased using this method by about 18%. • Equivalent to increasing battery life by 18%.
ShahriarEmami, Samsung Conclusion • A simple technique to improve the packet energy efficiency was presented. • The technique is suitable for asymmetric links. • Applicable to both VSF-TOOK and ULP-GFSK. • Utilizes degrees of freedom in both options.
