Milestones Achieved till 31st July 2011, in short span of 4 years • Screened more than 92,000 patients, out of which 71,000 (76.70%) have been screened free of cost. • Performed nearly 9,500 operations out of which 4,300 (45%) have been free of cost. • Conducted 315 Comprehensive Eye Camps out of which 65 camps were exclusively for schoolchildren. • Under Sri Rajiv Aarogyasri Scheme of Government of Andhra Pradesh: • No of camps conducted 141+ • No of Patients screened free of cost 20,000+ • No. of patients operated 2,700+

22. FUNDING PROPOSAL FOR ESTABLISHING EYE BANK According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Corneal Blindness is the world's fourth leading cause of blindness, after cataract, glaucoma and age-related problems.

23. INDIAN PICTURE According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) there are about 10 million blind and visually disabled persons in India alone - this number could double by the year 2020 unless immediate interventions are made. Of these 10 million, nearly two million persons have corneal blindness. Patients with corneal blindness can be visually rehabilitated only through transplanting their own damaged or disease affected corneas with healthy corneal tissues obtained from voluntary donors. Blindness continues to be one of the most important health concerns in Asia, Africa and Latin America. And every year nearly 50,000 to 55,000 more people fall victim to corneal blindness due to vitamin A deficiency, injury and infection. Over 38,500 Indians who died last year, helped blind people see through their eyes, representing a growth of nearly 30 per cent from the previous fiscal year, but still short for a country that has the world's largest number of blind people i.e. over one crore.

It is therefore critical, especially in the developing world, to set up eye banks of international standards that will pay particular attention to three primary objectives: • To increase the volume of corneal tissue available • fortransplantation • To apply the strictest medical standards in procuring • and preserving donor tissues, and • To maintain the highest levels of professionalism at • every stage in the process of eye banking. 

25. UNDERSTANDING CORNEAL BLINDNESS Anything you see is an image that enters your eye in the form of light. The different parts of your eye collect this light and send a message to your brain, enabling you to see. For perfect vision all the parts of your eye need to work properly.

The cornea is the clear, outer layer of the eye. • The pupil is an opening that lets light enter the eye. • The iris, the colored part of the eye, makes the • pupil larger or smaller. • The lens bends to focus light onto the retina. • The retina receives light that has been focused by • the cornea and lens. • A clear (vitreous) gel fills the inside of the eye, • giving it shape. • The cornea is clear to let light into the eye, and • curved to focus the light rays.

27. CORNEAL TRANSPLANTATION Replacement of a cornea is the only means of restoring full vision. If the rest of the eye (including the retina and optic nerve) is normal, the cornea is replaceable through transplant surgeries. With advancement in research and surgical techniques, ‘Corneal transplantation’ is one of the most successful organ transplant surgeries. The success of the procedure depends on the amount and type of damage the eye has sustained from disease or injury. The success rate can be as high as ninety-five percent. However, it is important to remember that vision can be restored only to the extent that the other parts of the eye are normal.

28. EYE DONATION & TISSUE AVAILABILITY Corneas for transplant come from individuals who have donated their eyes for use after their death, for the benefit of others. Donor corneal tissue can be used up to maximum of 4 days after the death of the donor depending on the modality of preservation. Normally donor tissue up to age seventy years is usable. Factors such as sex, colour of the iris, previous vision of the donor have no influence on the final outcome of the surgery.

29. ROLE OF EYE BANK The Eye Bank facilitates the transplantation of the eye of a donor to a patient who is in need of the transplantation. In view of the fact that donor ‘corneal tissue’ can be used up to a maximum of 4 days after the death, the Eye Bank plays a pivotal role in the preservation and provision of the tissue to a needy person.

30. ESTABLISHMENT OF EYE BANK PUSHPAGIRI Healthcare Hospitals Pvt Ltd is planning to establish an Eye Bank in the Hospital at Viziangaram as per the Government guidelines. THE objective of establishing the Eye Bank is to mobilize the donors, procure the tissues and use the same for needy patients in and around Vizianagaram. MINISTRY OF HEALTH GOVT OF INDIA GUIDELINES FOR EYE BANK With a view to ensuring that Eye Banks in India adopt certain minimum Quality standards, Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, New Delhi had in October 2009 issued a comprehensive guideline on establishing and running an Eye Bank.

31. As per the said guidelines, following are the minimum requirement: Infrastructure- Space: The minimum stipulated space for an Eye Bank is 600 Sq Feet which will accommodate the following: Serology Laboratory Tissue processing Laboratory Evaluation, Storage & Shipping Laboratory.

32. Transportation: It is important and more or less mandatory to have an Ambulance on a 24X7 basis for attending to the Calls and collecting the Tissues that are available • Instruments • As per the guidelines issued by Ministry of Health, Govt of India the following instruments are mandatory for getting accreditation: • The Slit Lamp • Autoclave Sterilizer • Refrigerators for storing blood sample, tissues and storage media • Serology Equipment • Specular Microscope • Sufficient sets of instruments for corneal excision and enucleation • Laminar Flow Hood (Class II) (This is required for the preservation of ocular tissue in the laboratory in case of whole globe removal (enucleation) and for processing scleral tissue).

33. COST OF EYE BANK PROJECT FUNDING PROPOSAL In view of the fact that the Hospital is located in Vizianagaram and tissus can be used within 4 days only, the beneficiary patients will be from Vizianagaram only. Keeping this aspect in mind, Pushpagiri Healthcare Hospital Pvt Ltd. requests the Rotary Club of Vizianagaram to come forward and support the establishment of the Eye Bank in the Hospital.

Gift of Vision Family Endowment Scheme Pushpagiri Eye Institute is delighted to announce the launching of a very special and noble scheme - “The Gift of Vision” Family Under the Endowment Scheme, a donor donates a one-time amount of Rs.10,000/- (Ten thousand only), which we deposit in a Nationalized Bank. The sum deposited earns interest out of which we undertake “Cataract Surgery” on a patient recommended/identified / sponsored by the Donor on any day of the year, year-after-year, for life. Pushpagiri Eye Institute will also connect the beneficiary to the Donor, year after year, by sending the photograph of the surgically cured patient duly validating the Gift of Vision Scheme. Donations under this scheme are eligible for tax concessions under 80-G of the IT Act.
