3 Types of Essays • DBQ (Document-based question) • Change-over-time • Comparative
Comparison Essay • 40 minutes timed (use 5 to plan) • Focuses on at least two regions or societies. • Relates to one of the five major themes of the course.
Thesis Writing • Thesis should fully address the question, set up organization of the paper, and take a position. • Do not be vague! Do not use words such as "very", "stuff", "lots", "really", etc. Do not just say there were similarities and differences, tell what they are. • Your thesis is a statement; It can be more than one sentence. • Remember, this is the first impression you give the reader and will set the tone for the essay. • Out of the nine possible essay points on the rubric, 1 is for the thesis alone. • Although you can get a point from a thesis at the end of a paper on the actual exam, I expect you to put it in the introductory paragraph. • For the comparative essay, use while/although/despite and include similarities and differences.
Organization • Organize the essay based on the categories you will discuss (E+PERSIA). • Each body paragraph needs to contain information on similarities AND differences of each of the societies. Use comparison words. • You could also organize by discussing first all the similarities and then all the differences, but this makes it harder to introduce analysis and is a less sophisticated format. • It is also possible to organize by discussing only one society first and then discussing the next one, but this leaves you likely to miss points on connections and direct comparison. • Make sure you end your essay with a conclusion that reiterates your thesis. If the reader didn’t like your beginning thesis, you can get the thesis point from your conclusion.
Writing Tips • Don't refer to yourself and don't directly address the reader. • Make yourself easily understood. (adequate spelling and usage; neat and legible handwriting)
