  6. Challenged • This book has been challenged for: • Drugs and Usage • Nudity • Offensive Language • Sexually Explicit • Unsuitable for Age Group • Offensive to a specific religious group.

  7. 2010 • Challenged, but retained at the John Muir Middle School library in Wausau (WI) despite a parent's request that the book be removed because of sexually explicit content. Retained in the Ponus Ridge Middle School library in Norwalk (CN). While many critics decry its style as "grammatically incorrect," most who take exception point to its foul language, sexual content, and questionable sexual behavior.

  8. Challenged in the Round Rock (TX) Independent School District middle school library due to the book's descriptions of sex, porn, alcohol, and inappropriate teacher-student relationships. The school offers parents the ability to tell the school if they do not want their children to check out particular books at the library.

Challenged at the William Floyd Middle School library in Mastic (NY) because the book includes "curse words, crude references to the male and female anatomy, sex acts and adult situations like drinking alcohol and flirtation with a teacher that almost goes too far." A spokesperson for the William Floyd School District said the book will remain in the library and that the book is very popular with students across the country. The spokesperson also said unlike many books that young people read, the book deals with controversial subjects without glorifying negative behaviors.

  10. How can I be proactive to support freedom to read • Join groups committed to preserving the right to read • Attend school board, library board meetings. • Join the National Coalition against Censorship • Join The Freedom to Read Foundation • Be aware of what’s happening • Get Involved

  11. My final point • I did not like this book personally. • It in my opinion does not deserve the status that so many challenged and banned books have received. • I would not put it on a required reading list. • I would however keep it on the shelf.
