Vocabulary/Terms • Narcotics – Specific drugs R obtainable only by prescription/ R used 2 relieve pain • Hallucinogens – Drugs that alter moods, thoughts/sense perception inc. vision, hearing, smell/touch. • Designer Drugs – Synthetic substances meant 2 imitate T effects of hallucinogens/oth dangerous drugs • CNS – Central Nervous Sys Brain/Spinal cord

  5. Health Risks of Stimulants • Stimulants that carry sm amt’s R: • Coffee, tea, cola’s, tobacco “Nicotine” • Most dangerous R: • Cocaine • Amphetamines • Methamphetamines

  6. Comes from Coca Plant – white power Very addictive/acts rapidly Interferes w/CNS User gets self-confident Effects last 20 min to sev. Hrs. Feel let down after hi Leads to depression, fatigue, paranoia, physiological dependence Damage blood vessels if snorted HIV or Hepatitis B - injection Cocaine

  7. Crack • More dangerous form of Cocaine • AKA crack cocaine, freebase rock • 1 of most deadly • A very pure form of Cocaine (concentrated)

  8. Amphetamines • Used in prescription drugs to reduce fatigue/drowsiness/suppress appetite • Used illegally to: • Stay awake • Lose weight

  9. Methamphetamines • Used to treat Parkinson/Obesity • White orderless powder • Produced in make shift labs • Associated w/concerts/all-nite parties • AKA Raves • Short term euphoria

  10. Health Risks of Depressants • Depressants relax muscles, feelings of worry • Cause drowsiness • Dangerous • Slow heart rate • Lower blood pressure • Interrupt normal breathing • Alcohol most common • Continued on next slide

  12. Barbiturates • Belong to sedatives-hypnotic drugs • Induce sleep • Cause mood chgs • Rarely used medically

  13. Tranquilizers • Reduce muscular activity: • Co-ordination • Attention span • Prescribed to relieve: • Anxiety • Muscle spams • Sleeplessness • nervousness

  14. Rohypnol • Club drug • AKA DATE RAPE drug • 10 X stronger than tranquilizers • Looks like aspirin

  15. GHB • Club drug • Used in DATE RAPE • Clear liquid or white powder • Leaves blood quickly

  16. Narcotics • Prescribed pain relievers • Morphine • OxyContin • Codeine • Block pain • Cause Euphoria • Drowsiness • Constipation • Pinpoint Pupils • Slow/Shallow breathing • Can cause addiction

  17. Heroin • A processed form of Morphine • Injected, snorted or smoked • Depress CNS

  18. Hallucinogens • Have no medical use • Examples R: • PCP (Phencyelidine) • Lysergic acid diethylamide • LSD • Ketamine • Ecstasy • Overload brain sensory controls • Impair judgment, reasoning • Inc. heart rate • Can last 4 several hrs or days

  19. PCP • 1 of most dangerous • Effect vary • Causes • Distorted sense of time • Inc muscle strength • Inability to feel pain • Flashbacks occur • Causing panic • Confusion • Lack of control

  20. LSD • Extremely strong • Distorts sounds/color • Effects brain emotional center • Distorts reality • Euphoria to deep depression • Flashbacks
