1. Work • Work – transfer of energy that occurs when a force makes an object move • Two conditions for work: • (A) object must MOVE AND • (B) object must move in the SAME DIRECTION as the applied force
2. Work and Energy • Remember…energy is the ability to cause change; in other words, the ability to do work • Energy is always transferred from the object that is doing the work to the object on which the work is done
3. Calculating Work • Work = Force X Distance • W= F X D • Force = N; Distance=M; Work = J • Greater force or distance…greater amount of work involved • (Distance only while force is applied to it.)
4. Power • Power – amount of work done in a certain amount of time; ie, the rate at which work is done • Power = Work/Time • Power is measured in watts (W)
Watts • Named after James Watt, inventor of the steam engine • Watt is very small…about the power needed to raise a glass of water from the table • Thus, power is often measured in kilowatts • 1 kilowatt = 1,000 watts
5. Power and Energy • Doing work is one way of transferring energy from one object to another (not all energy requires work) • Power is produced or used any time energy is transferred from one object to another • Thus, Power = Energy/Time
