  2. Monet was born in November 1840 in Paris, France. “Japanese Bridge”

  3. Monet didn’t like school so he walked around on the beaches instead and drew caricatures of tourist and sold them for money.

  4. Monet started to spend most of his time painting outside, painting simple landscapes and scenes from middle-class society.

  5. In 1874, Monet and his friends (Manet, Renoir, Pissarro & Sisley) had their first official show of Impressionist Art in Paris They were called “Impressionists” because their worked seemed sketchy and unfinished.

  6. One of Monet’s first paintings was titled “Impression: Sunrise” …and so the name IMPRESSIONISM was created to describe the style of art.

  7. Claude Monet was the most important of the Impressionist Painters. Impressionist painters used color and brushstrokes in a new way.

  8. Claude believed in painting by layering colors of paint.

  9. There are almost never any outlines in Impressionist Art! The whole painting is just blobs and smears of color!

  10. Claude tried to show the changing colors and shadows during the day. He painted this same haystack many times. Do you know what time of day Claude painted this?

  11. Other times Claude would paint the same picture at different times of the year. This was painted in the winter.

  12. Look closely at this painting. Can you see the brush strokes that Claude used?

  13. In 1883, Monet moved to Giverny which was not far from Paris. He bought a large farmhouse with two acres of gardens and built a lily pond that is arched with a Japanese bridge.

  14. Claude loved to paint the pond at his house in Giverny.

  15. Here’s the Japanese bridge that Claude had built over his pond!

  16. More than anything, Claude loved to paint the water lilies in his pond.

  17. In his water lily paintings Claude liked to paint the reflections of light and color in the water.

  18. In this picture Claude used his Impressionist style of layering to paint his wife, Camille.

  19. At the age of 60, Monet’s eyesight began to fail him. Claude Monet He continued to paint until he died in 1926 at the age of 86. Because of his failing eyesight his final paintings were very large (some as big as 40 feet wide) and were almost abstract. 1840-1926
