PFOS at Military Bases in Kansas Timeline of National Military Actions for PFOS/PFOA • U.S. EPA Lifetime Health Advisory (HA) of 0.07 µg/L for PFOS/PFOA 2017 DOD directed installations to: • Identify locations with known or suspected releases of PFOS/PFOA • Test for PFOS/PFOA in base drinking water and address contamination above HA • DOD identified 401 total active/closed installations with known or suspected releases of PFOS/PFOA • Contaminated water sources addressed alternative water sources – city, rural, or bottled water 2018 - 2019 Identification of PFOS/PFOA sources on bases in process

PFOS at Military Bases in Kansas Sources of PFOS/PFOA at Military Bases • Aerosol Fire Fighting Foam (AFFF) principle source (1976) • PFOS/PFOA compounds make up the AFFF • Many long and short chain compounds are part of AFFF • Chemicals move readily with water but don’t easily degrade Potential future sources to investigate: Landfills, wastewater treatment plants, possible spill sites

  23. PFOS at Military Bases in Kansas Summary All military bases have started the site evaluation process for the presence of PFOS and PFOA compounds. Site Investigations are done for two active bases, in progress at the third base, and will be started in 2019-2020 for the SFAAP. Ft. Leavenworth, with affected water-supply wells, has city water. Remedial Investigations will begin in the near future at sites with water and soil detections of PFOS and PFOA compounds.
