  2. First day of class! • Classes begin tomorrow, Thursday, Sept. 6. • Meet in front of Building CE5 at 8:30 am to get your class schedule. Then we’ll take you to your classroom

  6. Textbooks • You will need textbooks for most classes. • The names of the books will be on your class schedule. • You can buy your books at the UCI Bookstore.

  7. Class levels for CC:Level A: BeginningLevel B: High beginningLevel C: Low intermediateLevel D: IntermediateLevel E: High intermediateLevel F: Advanced

  8. Class levels for BE:No separate levelsYou must be intermediate level or higherIf your score on the placement test today is too low, we will place you in Conversation & Culture.

  9. Placement TestToday’s test has 100 questions: • 20 about listening • 80 about grammar, vocabulary, reading

  10. Part-time students • If you have a tourist visa (not a student visa), your class hours must be less than 17 hours total per week • If you have not already chosen your classes, please come and talk to me.

  11. Grading for both CC and BE: • You’ll receive letter grades in your classes. • A = 90%-100% • B = 80%-89% • C = 70%-79% • Failing = below 70% • D = 60% - 69% • F = < 60%

  12. Attendance Policy Please attend class every day so that… • You will learn as much as possible. • You won’t have any visa problems. • You will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the program.

  13. Attendance Policy If you miss more than 14 total hours of class… • You will not receive a certificate of completion. • You may be dismissed from the program.

  14. Lateness Policy • Less than 15 minutes late = Tardy (Late) • 15+ minutes late = 1 hour absence • 3 Tardies (Lates) = I hour absence

  15. Institutional TOEFL Test • Friday, September 28, 2:00 – 5:00 pm • Paper and pencil test (not the iBT TOEFL) • Cost: $75. • You may sign up for the test at the cashier window in Building CE3. • The deadline to sign up is Monday, Sept. 10.

  16. Reminder: Smoking is not allowed anywhere at UCI.
