  1. Significance Of a Mediterranean Landscape Design

  2. Due to its ecological significance for nature conservation, which is also one of the Foundation’s goals, we are interested in advancing the use of xeriscaping (the use of drought-resistant plants and techniques for water conservation) together with native plant species. The adaptation of these spaces to the ecological conditions of our environment is crucial given the current situation, where a sizable portion of the Mediterranean coast is occupied by urbanization and residences with landscaped areas. People frequently use exotic plants from far-off nations, whose nutritional needs are entirely dissimilar from those offered by our climate, resulting in excess use of water and other resources. The generalization of these exotic environments denaturalizes our Mediterranean landscape, causes native flora and fauna to become increasingly scarce, if not extinct, and contributes to significant ecological imbalances. Mediterranean landscape design cost is reasonable. Most of the time, the decision to design these exotic gardens in this way, as if it were their only option, is a response to aesthetic fads that could be described as fashions. FUNDEM encourages alternative gardening techniques based on regional Mediterranean components. In this regard, the municipality of Pedreguer, Alicante, has planned the Mediterranean garden of l’Albarda, which will cover an area of about 50,000 square meters and be entirely made of local plants. Initially owned by the organization’s founding president, D. Enrique Montoliu, it is now primarily lent to the Foundation. Plans for the garden include becoming wholly owned by the Foundation and are run entirely on donations from the general public. The Master of Landscaping Award 2002, given by the Polytechnic University of Valencia, honors the area’s natural and landscape quality.

  3. The garden needs specific infrastructure and upkeep to be used as a space for public enjoyment and as a gardening model. Other activities such as 1) building and providing equipment for the reproduction of plant species, many of which are used for the first time in gardening, and 2) adapting spaces for the implementation of purely teaching activities, courses, practises, thesis, etc. add to the demands on the infrastructure and manpower. Here are some benefits of creating a Mediterranean garden as a sustainable environment: Reduced water use: Native plants only require irrigation for the first two years after planting because of their climatic and soil adaptations. Then, even in the summer, they can only survive on the water brought on by rain. Reduced costs: Since plants reproduce quickly in this favorable environment, they only need to be purchased once. Having aesthetic concepts is the only necessary work. It helps to keep our landscape in good shape: Preserving our environment is crucial. We contribute to the growth of our flora when we introduce native plants. These species will only be able to exist in natural areas, which are regrettably becoming more and more degraded and disappearing, without our assistance. Throughout the year, the garden is lovely: Many plants are ready to bloom at all times of the year, and their numbers are constantly renewed by the seasons. Environmentally friendly maintenance is performed on it: Pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, and fertilizers do not need to be removed. The most significant contributor to soil contamination is these substances, which are frequently abused or misused. A pond with access to insects, birds, reptiles, and amphibians is sufficient to restore the biological balance. • • • • •

  4. The Icons Of The Mediterranean Garden Due to the wonderful weather, people in the Mediterranean region prefer to spend their time outdoors. For hundreds of years, they have engaged in outdoor dining, conversation, and gardening. Three symbols of the Mediterranean garden have grown and changed: the bocce ball, tiered fountains, and herb gardens. The game of bocce ball originated in ancient Italy during the Roman era. Getting your ball as close to the jack as possible is the objective, similar to lawn bowling. On a lengthy, slender court, the game is played by two, four, six, or eight players. To learn more, research bocce ball courts. Practically every courtyard and square in Europe has a tier-style fountain. The most famous fountain in the world is, without a doubt, Rome’s Trevi Fountain. Garden fountains with tiers can be simple or intricately carved with carvings and sculptures. Around the world, herb gardens are quite popular. Throughout the medieval era, monks and nuns who lived close to the Mediterranean were skilled at cultivating herbs for culinary and medicinal purposes. Families on their own are now more likely to participate in this activity. You can easily incorporate the vibrant flavors of French and Italian cuisine into your dishes if you have a herb garden.
