  5. Today we will learn.. • How to identify the different zones used in city planning • How to use this information to organize businesses

  6. Discussion • What is the name of the city we live in? • What makes a city a city? • What do buildings do for people in a city?

  7. CITY What is a city? An important place of business, where people live, work, and play What is a city planner? A person who decides what types of buildings go where in a city

  8. ZONES What are zones? • Land areas set aside for certain purposes, such as housing or businesses • Rules govern how land can be used in zones

  9. Activity – Floor Map Multipurpose Zone Residential Zone Agricultural Zone Business Zone Industrial Zone Remember: Mr. Abi

  10. Activity – Floor Map • Turn to Page 4 in your Junior Journal. • Be a city planner for a day and complete this worksheet!

  11. Key Terms What is a good? Items that are bought and sold. What is a service? Work done for others, such as hair cuts or car repairs.

  12. Activity – Pop-Up Buildings • Name your building and write it on the blank line. • Color your building. • Assemble your building. See directions. • Place building on floor map.

Activity – Pop-Up Buildings To Assemble Your building: • Hold the building with two hands with the longer flap is pointed up and away from you. • Gently push in on the sides until the sheet pops into a box and the base of the box closes. • Stand the building on your desk. • Fold the small flaps in. • Fold the long flaps’ tips down. • Close the box, pushing the folded tip in.

  14. Activity – Pop-Up Buildings Discussion: • Is this a business you would like to start someday? • What other types of businesses are important to make a city work well? • What other businesses would you like to see if you built a city?

  19. Discussion Why do people in cities need money? Why do you think cities need money? Name a business where you or your family spent money this week.

  20. TAXES What are taxes? Fees charged by a government. The city government uses the money from taxes to pay the wages of city workers. Most people are required to pay taxes.

  21. SALES TAX What is sales tax? An extra amount of money added to the cost of a good or service paid by the buyer, even if he or she does not live in the city.

  22. Activity – Sales Tax Step 1 You will add the sales tax to each item to see what you can buy with a $10 Zoo Gift Card. Step 2 Sales Tax = 5% For each dollar you spend, you will need to pay an additional 5 cents.

  23. INCOME What is income? Money earned for work. People use their income to buy the things they need and want.

  24. Needs and Wants What is a need? Something you cannot live without. What is a want? Something you would like to have but could do without.

  25. Activity – Payment Methods What is cash? Money in the form of bills or coins What is a check? A written order to a bank to pay money to a person or business

  26. Activity – Payment Methods What is a debit card? A card that subtracts what you buy from your checking account. Money is deposited in a checking account. What is an electronic payment? A way to bank or pay for things using the Internet.

  27. Activity – Payment Methods What is a credit card? A card that allows users to pay for things with borrowed money from a bank. Credit cards are not free money!

  28. Review • What is the name for the money people earn by doing a job? • What form of payment would you use to buy goods and services? • Why is it good for a city to have businesses?

  34. Banks and Credit Unions What is a bank or credit union? Businesses where people and other businesses save, borrow, and exchange money

  35. Key Terms Deposit: To put money into a bank account. Interest: Money paid for the use of someone else’s money The bank pays interest to people who deposit money. Withdrawal: Removal of money from a bank account.

  36. How do banks make money? • Banks earn money when they charge interest on the money businesses and people borrow. • Banks charge more interest to borrowers than the interest they pay to savers.

  37. Example You wish to borrow $1,000 to buy a car with 7% interest. Interest = $70 You want to deposit $1,000 in my bank. This account pays 2% interest. Interest = $20

  38. Key Terms Savings: Money put aside to use later. Savings account: A bank account for saving money.

  39. Activity – Piggy Bank Savings Game Game Board: 3 Types of Spaces Deposit – Players earn money and deposit it into their accounts. Withdraw – Players spend money and must make a withdrawal from their account. That’s Life! – Players draw a That’s Life! card.

  40. Activity – Piggy Bank Savings Game Instructions • You will start with a balance of $250. • Select a game piece and place it on START. Roll to see who goes first. Highest roll goes first. • The first player rolls and moves clockwise that number. Read the game space instructions aloud and record the transaction in My Account Register. • Next player’s turn. • Don’t forget to make a piggy bank deposit of $50 each time you pass START. • The player with the most money in his or her bank account at the end of the game is the winner.
