Setting Our Goals, cont. • 3. Describe goals you’ve SET and ACCOMPLISHED • 4. What is one behavioral change you’d like to accomplish in order to reach your academic goals? • 5. THREE Procrastination types: Relaxed, Genius, Avoider • 6. THREE ways to help with procrastination: • Put away pleasure • Don’t multitask • Take breaks – non-stimulating breaks
SHORT Term Goals • Can be achieved quickly- in days or weeks • Think of 3 different short term goals you have
LONG term goals • May take months or years to achieve • Can have multiple short term goals within each long term goal • Think of 3 different long term goals you have
Differences • Example: Passing Health- is a LT goal. Passing your next Health assignment is a ST goal that will help you reach your LT goal.
6 S’s for Goal Setting • Safe – can it harm you? • Satisfying – will you feel good? • Sensible – is it realistic? • Similar – like other goals? Not contradicting? • Specific – clear goal, not broad. • Supported – adults or others to support you?
Action Plan • Step-by-step set of directions that will help you reach your goal • Think of it as a “To Do” list • Should contain dates, rewards, and ability to track progress
Rewards • Have sensible rewards that you can decide with your family for reaching goals. • Small goals= small rewards, Large goals= large rewards!
Stay Positive • Use positive statements that help to reinforce your OWN belief that you can achieve your goal!
What can get in the way of goals? • Goal Blockers: Things that can delay goals or make them harder to achieve • Example: Watching TV or playing video games instead of doing homework. Talking with friends in class instead of paying attention. • Suggestion: Make time for the goal blockers, after you’re all finished with your work • Goal Busters: Things that can eliminate your goals altogether • Example: Dropping out of school, doing drugs, committing crimes, lying or falsifying information
Goals You’ve Set • List some short term goals you set in the past month: • Circle the goals you achieved • What helped you achieve those goals? • What kept you from achieving the ones you didn’t reach? • List some long term goals you’ve had in the past. • Circle the goals you’re still working on • Did you reach any of the goals you set? Which ones? • What kept you from achieving the ones you didn’t reach?
Action Plan • Look at your long term goals that you hope to achieve. • 1) How are you going to achieve it? • 2) What are the steps needed in achieving your goal? • 3) Tell me what strengths you have that will help you achieve your goal • 4) Who do you have in your life that can help you reach this goal and prove me wrong?
