You can use your 5 senses (eye sight, touch, hearing, smell, and taste) and you can use different tools like a ruler, tribe beam balance, or thermometer. • Comparative Investigation: A comparative investigation is similar to a descriptive investigation except that you are describing two or more things and listing the similarities and differences between them. Again, you may use your 5 senses and other scientific instruments. • Experimental Investigation: When you perform an experimental investigation, you change one variable (the independent variable) to see how it affects or changes another variable (the dependent variable). Also, before beginning an experimental investigation, you should write a hypothesis. She is not sure which flower will attract the most butterflies, so she plants 4 different kinds. She records the number of visit by butterflies to each flower and chooses one to plant in her garden. Investigation III: Ofelia is interested in knowing the average mass of a cardinal’s egg. During one week, she visits 10 cardinals’ nests and measures the mass of all the eggs in the nest using a triple beam balance. She determines that the average mass of a cardinal egg is 8.6 grams.
