Descartes Moment • What do you know about E-Moments? • What do you think you know about E-Moments? • What don’t you know yet about E-Moments? • Identify Commonalities • Rephrase what you don’t know yet into questions
What Prevents Teachers from Using Them? • The Unknown • Set in their ways • Lack of time or motivation! • “That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of, my kids would NEVER go for that!”
How do you overcome those negative thoughts? • Safety First • Risk Boldly • Engage YOURSELF! • Give acknowledgement freely • Celebrate often • Set the context – refuse to limit their ability • BELIEVE!
How do they work? • Chunking: organizing material in meaningful units. • Rote Rehearsal: repeating information or a skill many times. • Elaborative Rehearsal: immersing information in meaning or highlighting its relevance. • Pattern Recognition: identifying familiar patterns. • Emotional Involvement: embedding information with feelings or emotions.
Go-Get-It Moment • Break into Pairs • Hidden around the room are 11 cards • Each card has an E-Moment on it • When I say “GO!” your task is to: • Find a card • Present your E-Moment to the class, being sure to include: • An explanation • Which types of learners it applies to • The level of thinking it hits • How it can be modified • How YOU could use it
Let’s Complete Descartes! • Can you answer your questions?
Next Time… • Creating a Unit of Instruction • Lesson Plans and Discussion Paper Due on Monday!
