Les verbes en -er Remember, an infinitive has two parts: STEM + ENDING When conjugating a verb, the STEMdoes not change. The ENDINGS DO change: -e -ons je nous -ez -es tu vous -e -ent il/elle ils/elles
PARLER = to speak Regular –erverb (folllows a predicatablepattern) Stem is PARL- parle parlons je nous tu parles vous parlez il / elle parle ils/elles parlent NOTE: the –entis silent
HABITER = to live Regular –erverb (folllows a predicatablepattern) stem is HABIT- habite j’ nous habitons tu habites vous habitez il / elle habite ils/elles habitent • the –entis silent liaison when the verb begins with a vowel sound: aimer adorer étudierorganiser inviter écouter
NAGER = to swim Regular –GER verb (folllows a predicatable pattern) stem is NAG- nage nageons je nous tu nages vous nagez il / elle nage ils/elles nagent when the infinitive of a verb ends in –ger, the NOUSform ends in -geons manger: voyager: nous mangeons nous voyageons
LA NÉGATION Negative sentences are formed as follows: Subject +NE + VERB + PAS N’ (+vowel sound) Éric et Anne neparlentpas. Michèlen’habitepasen France Examples: J’aime la classe de français. LANGUAGE COMPARISONS English has several verb forms for expressing actions in the present. French has only ONE. Compare: I playtennis. I do playtennis. I am playingtennis. Jejoueautennis. LES ADVERBES Words used to modify verbs Tell how often, how much, or how well Subject +verb +adverb Subject + ne + verb + pas +adverb Subject + verb +adverb+ infinitive Je nagebien. To express what you like & don’t like, use these constructions: SUBJECT + n’ PRESENT TENSE + pas + INFINITVE… of aimer SUBJECT + PRESENT TENSE + INFINITVE… of aimer Nous aimons voyager.
