Chapter 2: Lesson 2.6Rational Functions Domain In general the domain will be all real numbers excluding those values that make the denominator = 0, but also pay attention to radicals with an even index. Vertical Asymptotes Anywhere that makes the denominator = 0 is a vertical asymptote. There is an exception to that rule we’ll discuss shortly.
Rational Zero Test If the order in the numerator is greater than the order of the denominator, then there is NO horizontal asymptote. If the order of the numerator is less than the order of the denominator, then there is a horizontal asymptote at y = 0. If the order in the numerator and denominator are equal, then there is a horizontal asymptote at
Graphing Rational Functions Simplify and factor if possible. Determine x-intercepts and y-intercepts. Determine horizontal and vertical asymptotes. Plot AT LEAST 1 point between each x-intercept and vertical asymptote. Connect the points and make smooth curves.
Slant Asymptotes Occurs when the degree of the numerator is EXACTLY one greater than the denominator.
