“Come, follow me ...” • Title for this section: • “With Authority” • “Follow Me” • People are amazed: • Soon moves to offense at him • A few, slowly align their lives with his call.
1. Jesus goes where the People are • Galilee – northern part of Israel. • Fertile, densely populated. • God takes initiative to get the message to them • Says something about the nature of the message
1. Jesus goes where the People are ... • Types of information: • People discover themselves: e.g. holidays, price of gas. • Specific to certain people: e.g. Notes from school • Urgent for everyone: e.g. Boil-water advisory. • Still have responsibility to get the message out ! • Jesus calls people to share his mission
2. Jesus Calls People to Follow Him • Calls Simon (Peter) & Andrew, James & John • They drop everything and follow him. • Jesus comes before livelihood and family. • He “will make them to be fishers of people” (v 17) • Are we characterized by putting Jesus before work and family?
2. Jesus Calls People to Follow Him ... • First part – putting Jesus before work – we accept • What about Jesus before family? • sometimes an excuse for not serving ? ? ? • Simon – home in Capernaum & a family (v 29-30) • His wife was a believer and travelled with him (1 Co 9:5) • Jesus’ call on Peter had huge implications for his family.
3. Jesus stays true to his Mission • Jesus was a hit in Capernaum • He could have a strategy with Capernaum as his base • He must go elsewhere to preach as well • That is why he has come (v 38) • Jesus knew his purpose
3. Jesus stays true to his Mission ... • What is God’s call on your life? • Sometimes our ministry is to stay where we are and serve • We are ALL in “full-time” ministry ! • All called to the same faithfulness, sacrifice, obedience ...
What is Jesus calling you to do? • Approach your work in a new way. Bless others. • Release a spouse for something. • Return to your First-Love (God) • Sacrificing to benefit your spouse • Is work or family an excuse for unavailability ?
