Introduction to glamour photography About Glamour Power in photography separates pictures from photographs and photographers from shooters. Anyone can shoot a picture, but not everyone can capture a photograph. Glamour is not something new, its roots go back to the early 1900’s, originating in Hollywood where photographs provided power to the already famous. The producers wanted their stars to shine, not glimmer, and they knew that good photographers could capture the drama.
Introduction to glamour photography About Glamour Started in 1920’s The beginning of Hollywood movies The studio used the photographs for celebrity portrait for movie stars The studios needed to promote their movie stars Impression : glamour, beautiful Lighting : hot lights (specular lights)
Introduction to glamour photography Celebrity Portraits The movie stars have to look beautiful, glamorous, almost to perfect to be human (god / goddess) Attitude : cool, arrogant, beyond reach and often not looking at the camera Clothing style : Women : beautiful dresses Men : very neat, masculine, suit, hat, cigarette
Characteristics of glamour photography Elements Of Glamour To incorporate a clean background Separating the subject from the background Use medium to long telephoto lenses Lens compression, found naturally in telephoto lenses, helps eliminate natural clutter, or distracting details
Lighting Characteristics of glamour photography In 1920’s the photographers had to work with were “hard” lights Shadows were used as dramatic enhancements. They used them to heighten the sense of “drama” to the scene.
Lighting Specular lighting 4 lights or more : • Lighting pattern : for the face • Hair light • Edge light • Background light (often use props for background)
