  2. The Environment • Be sure to install the computer in a computer friendly environment • Friendly Environment? Should be: • Dust free (almost) • Smoke free • Have a controlled humidity level (50% to 70%)

  3. Ideal Places to install a computer • Office • Home office/bedroom • Classroom • Dorm • Kitchen

  4. Paying attention to your computer’s home • If: • You have indoor pets (dogs/cats) • Pet hairs can cause poor air circulation • Dusty/dirty conditions • Cleaning your computer must be done more regularly • Avoid exposing your computer to the environment • Try placing your computer in a cabinet with proper air circulation

  5. How to clean your computer • Basic cleaning kit • Lint free cloth • Cleaning Solution • Mixture of water and soap • Cotton swaps

  6. Cleaning your computer cont. • Antistatic spray • 10 parts water with 1 part fabric softener • Dust removal • Small paintbrush • Air compressor (air duster) • Small vacuums

  7. Cleaning your computer Cont. • NEVER USE LIQUIDS INSIDE A COMPUTER. Never apply liquids directly to the surface of a computer. First apply to a cleaning cloth. Never use any solvent-based cleaners • E.g. will be anything that can be flammable or capable of corroding computer equipment

  8. Protection from Environmental Hazards • Dust-free/smoke-free • Controlled humidity • Controlled temperature • Good ventilation

  9. Other environmental hazards • Weight • Properly lift equipment • Use your legs and NOT your arms • Cuts • Majority of computer parts have sharp edges, take your time and be careful • Trip hazards • Be aware of your surroundings/ computer cables and extension cords

Electrical Hazards • ESD • Electrostatic discharge • Damages computer components • Make sure you are properly grounded before working inside a computer • Grounds • Properly ground computer equipment to prevent electrical hazards • EMI • Electromagnetic interference • Strong magnetic fields • Powerful electrical motors • Can corrupt communication • Can corrupt data

Electrical Hazards cont. • High Voltages • Computers use +/- 3.3, 5, and 12 volts DC • Power supplies handle up to 120-240 volts AC • This is why you never open a power supply case • Replace not repair • Monitors can store up to 50,000 VDC, to drive the CRT • Never work inside a monitor unless you are a trained technician with the proper tools

Guidelines to follow • Never wear jewelry or other metal objects when working on a computer • Never have liquids around electrical components • Do not defeat the safety feature of the three-prong power plug by using two-prong adapters • Replace any worn or damaged power cords immediately • Avoid using improper extension cords • Keep all electrical covers intact • Make sure all vents are clear and have ample free-air space to allow heat to escape • Make sure before removing covers of peripheral devices that they are properly grounded

Preventive Maintenance • By following general cleaning rules and safety measures you can prolong the life of your computer • Monitors • Keep it clean – periodic cleaning, dusting, and good common sense • Use simple cleaning solutions, never use aerosol sprays, solvents or commercial cleaners • Do not leave monitors on for extended periods • Use a screen saver to prevent burn-ins • Never work inside a monitor • Monitors emit radiation. Tampering with internal settings can increase hazards

Preventive Maintenance cont. • Hard Drives • Avoid rough handling • Never move a hard drive when it is still spinning • Never expose the internal parts • Perform regular data backups • Use software such as scandisk, defragmentation, and antivirus programs • Keyboard/Mouse • Use a hand held vacuum or brush to remove dust • Never use spray cleaners • Never touch the ends of the optical light with your fingers

  15. Preventive Maintenance Cont. • Floppy Drives • Diskettes • Do not expose to magnets • Never touch the exposed surface of a floppy diskette • Never use floppy diskettes that have bend dust covers • Avoid exposure to extreme temperatures
