  2. SCHOOL FOOD PLAN “We have recommended that free school meals should be extended to all primary school children, starting with the most deprived areas. This is the only one of our recommendations that the government has not agreed to yet. We understand that the considerable cost and the need to involve other departments makes it a big ask. But we are pleased that the Secretary of State agrees with us in principle and we would urge schools and councils to consider funding universal free school meals themselves”

BENEFITS TO CHILDREN Free school meals help boost educational attainment “pupils made between four and eight weeks more progress over the two year pilot than pupils in other areas” Free school meals help to keep children healthy “only 1% of packed lunched meet the nutritional standards of school meals” Free school meals help children living in poverty avoid stigma “(Getting FSM) makes me feel like I don’t have a good mum but mummy is disabled and I do get bullied sometimes”

BENEFITS TO THE PUBLIC SERVICES Free School meals can help to tackle food poverty “the scale of hunger amongst school children is of serious concern” Universal free schools meals would increase pupil premium money “Schools only get money for children who take up their free school meals not for children entitled to it”

What’s happened so far… • 4in10 and CPAG meeting with Local authorities (starting with top 10 for child poverty) to discuss models for universal provision • Tower Hamlets announced plans to fund FSMs for all children in Reception and Year 1 • Mayor of London supported the campaign after being asked at a question time by Fiona Twycross

  7. Free school meals for all Key stage 1 • Government announcement: the program beginning next year will ensure a hot lunch is available to all children in reception, year 1 and year 2 - pupils aged between five and seven. • It is a start! • The change - for children in reception, year one and year two - will save parents about £400 a year per child.
