Coat of Arms • Center triangle has five volcanoes rising out of the sea, symbolizes five member states of United Provinces of Central America. • Above volcanoes is a red Phrygian cap (freedom and pursuit of liberty) on a staff before a sun with date 15 September, 1821, Independence Day of El Salvador. • Over it is a rainbow. • Behind the coat of arms there are five flags representing the flags of the Federal Republic of Central America. Under it, there is a scroll which states the national motto of El Salvador • Surrounded by a laurel garland, divided into 14 different parts, which symbolize the 14 Departments, the Salvadorian subnational administrative units.

  8. Geography El Salvador is bordered by Guatemala to the west, Honduras to the east (as well as to the north), the North Pacific Ocean to the south, and Nicaragua to the south east.

History • Pedro de Alvarado led the first conquistadors into El Salvador in June 1524. • The native Pipil people defeated the Spaniards. • In 1525 and 1528 two more efforts were made to get the Pipil people under Spanish control • September 15, 1821, gained independence from Spain • Joined the Mexican Empire under the rule of Emperor Agustin de Iturbide • In 1823, the United Provinces of Central America formed by five Central American states under General Manuel José Arce. • 1838, El Salvador became an independent republic • Coffee industry grew in El Salvador • The most notable event was the 1932 Salvadoran peasant uprising or the La Matanza (the massacre) approximately 30,000 people were murdered, imprisoned or exiled. • Salvadoran Civil War (1980-1992) resulted from the elections being unfair
